    Can my gunsmith do this?

My gunsmith only has a "manufacturor" FFL in CA. I'm asking this question for him because he so busy.

I need him to pick up my two AR-15's from the Sheriff's department, convert them to featureless, and then somehow get them back to me. This is a problem because he can only release a gun back to the individual who he picked them up from.

We are both wondering if anything would prevent him from getting them over to a fully fledged FFL with a retailers license after he makes the conversion for me.

There's more too this whole story but this is the meat and potatoes at the moment.

    Thank you in advance!

This will be interesting with 4 posts in 4 years and your ars are in control of sheriffs. Plus you hide your location so we have no idea which leos have them. I smell a rat here.

Without knowing why they have your ARs there is no way of knowing if they can be released to anyone no matter what their FFL status.

I'm not even sure he can retrieve them from the Sheriff without more information. Why they are there and what exactly they are will determine what can be done and who can do it.

As said, the problem is that unless he has a so-called a-salt weapon permit, he can't possess the firearms. If you can get the police to take the receiver off, then it is no longer a so-called a-salt weapon. At that point, you should be able to pick them up.

You would have to check with the police to see if he can pick them up as an exempt FFL, assuming he has the proper permits. He could then transfer the firearms to a dealer for the DROS transfer back to you.
