No serial number, DOJ had a issue with it.

I registered a Model 37 Winchester shotgun (1936-1963 single shot shotgun) with no serial number. I put NVSN like I normally do in the situation, I sell mostly C&R guns so its completely normal for us.

I had a DOJ employee call me adn direct me to the AFS to have a serial number issued before she would clear the DROS??!!

Has anyone else had the DOJ mess with them on something like this? The shotgun never had a serial number, it was not obliterated or anything like that.

Im going to humor her and contact AFS and see what they say, and when they tell me shes crazy Im hoping I can convince her this is normal.

That's possible - the range of human abilities is surely spread across government jobs as much as it is the rest of the world.

But I'd like to stick up for civil servants generically, having been one in CA for a couple of years.

CA-DOJ particularly is poorly led by the elected/appointed Attorneys General for the last 20 years or so; I think this has resulted in poor training and lack of opportunities for training, and a fair amount of 'go along with policy, or just go' pressure.

Also, under CA laws...
Since it's a long gun that was made before 12-16-1968 and it's a C&R, it's exempt from needing a serial number. [PC 29181(b) & (e)]

It was mfg before the GCA of 1968 AND its curio and relic.

IMO... ignorant admin drone that believes all firearms needs to have a serial number in order to be legal because that's what the media says.

I agree. Shes going to end up having to back down, there's no way that should be a valid reason to deny a DROS.

I left her a messege and quoted the PC. Its a pain in the neck though. I dros THOUSANDS of C&R guns so this is every day business for me.

UPDATE
So I talked to AFS and he agreed he did not need to give me a serial and agreed it didn't required one.

He told me to put ANTIQUE1 as the SN. I told him I dont want to use the term antique on the DROS becuase I actually sell antiques.

He then tried to argue the fixed ammunition thing (NFA definition) and what the definition of antique is in CA. I explained to him that it is C&R not auntie anyways, and NVSN is a acceptable version of no visible serial number and is acceptable in the industry.

He then agreed and said he would talk to his manager about NVSN being acceptable. But he said either way I would be good to go. lol

Doj called again, and changed its mind, and wants 2antique as the SN (on a curio and relic firearm)..

So after a bit of a discussion with Sherry Carter, she threatened to cancel the DROS if I didn't change the sn to 2antique.

I told her I dont want to put antique anywhere on the DROS because I actually sell antiques and don't want to confuse anyone, antique being a legal definition and all.

I sent a email with my objections to the DOJ, but doubt any change will come from it.
