So, I finally transferred a customer's gun that I had for 1959 days, is that a record?

It was falsely claimed to be a C&R, but was made in 1967 sometime. I could not get the month, so I had to wait until 2018 to transfer it. I couldn't send it back to the FFL who sent it because he disappeared due to Hurricane Sandy.

I should have a policy to not deal with M57s, I have had too many problems with them.

Just curios here. How much did you charge for storage fees! Or maybe if the customer got you a nice bottle of whiskey to make up for the dust collector you had in your safe.

I've had guns in pawn that long but I don't think that technically counts.

I didn't charge anything for storage. It wasn't his fault. It was the fault of the importer since the import certificate claimed it was a C&R. Then I told the FFL selling it not to ship since I had the same exact problem with an M57 before, but he shipped it anyhow. Then the hurricane took out the seller.

What could I do?

He did give me a nice bottle of rum.

We run into that quite often. I get auction guns that are 49ish years old, and we hold them until they are C&R becuase it helps sell it (lots of C&R FFLs buy online at auction). Ive had guns in here for years at a time lol its scary because sometimes you forget the story on them.

Storage fees can be counter productive and push away the customers. I really only charge storage fees if the customer is causing me problems or yanking my chain. Otherwise it behooves us to just put it in the back for a while.

If it was the customer's fault, I would charge storage, but it wasn't. You have to do the right thing.

As it turns out, shortly before I contacted him saying that it could be transferred, he had remembered it. So if I hadn't contacted him, he would have thought that I just kept it.
