CA DOJ further insanity

I submitted an issue with the CA DOJ and so far I am getting nowhere with them. My email domain name has a "-" in it, which does not work with the CFARS web site. Imagine that, a valid domain name is unacceptable to them. Kind of funny that a "@" is acceptable, which is a special character, as well as a ".".

DOJ Response (01/09/2018 11:56 AM): Unfortunately, CFARS only allows you to use alpha and numeric characters. CFARS will not accept an application with any special characters.

I wonder if any of the firearms lawyers would like to have some fun with this.

Add a CFARS compliant email to your list of emails used for your domain?? Sometimes dealing with the insanity might be a bigger hassle than its worth? Just a thought. . . .

Yup, make a new email account. Something like "dojsucks@gmail.com" or "cfarsisajoke@gmail.com" I'm sure they won't even notice it.

Yes, I can just deal with their stupidity, but if you think that we should have to, remember that the next time you have an issue with what they are doing, just deal with it instead.

In this case I'll suggest terminally lazy or actively hostile. There are software library routines - free or near-free - to validate email addresses.

It could be something a bit different. They seem to discriminate against "-"s. They don't like them it seems. Even though the BATF says that the "-" is officially part of the serial number of a firearm, like with Ruger, and even though you have to sign the DROS saying that it is accurate, the DES refuses to allow you to enter the "-" as part of the serial number. I always put the real serial number in the comments field when the serial number has a "-". They also seem to have something against "&" as well since that can't be in the model name of a firearm even though it actually is. I think it can be in the Manufacturer name though.

One funny thing was that a name in the list of manufacturers had a typo in it (firearn or something like that) and I was told by a person at the DES to not use it because it was wrong. I am sure many others have used it. What makes it funny is that I talked to an inspector at the DOJ and was told that the name really doesn't manner since it is saved as a code number, which is where the list comes from.

It may have less to do with their stupidity than with programming. My names has an apostrophe in it, other than my signature I almost never use it. Computer system don't like it. When I started at my current employer 17+ years ago they put it in my account and matching email. Shortly after I had to have it made an alias and change my account to take it out. My SQL server would fail to run anything under my account because of the "'" in my name.

No dashes, no spaces, no extra periods. I don't even do it in file names. Sounds silly but it's safe for computers.

There's still lots of reasons to hate DOJ and CA lawmakers and functionaries though

Shop it to the various outfits in their legal quests. Making a new email versus using your bona fide business one demonstrates injury, further proof of the inabilities of the system, and could lead to insecure communication between you and CADOJ during correspondence through third party services like @gmail or @yahoo.

Will it go anywhere? probably not, but if the legal minds can use it to prevent 2A intrusions, then more power to them.

And since the DOJ Programmer in charge of this system sleeps at his desk and is hostile towards any change to "his program". . . . .we get what we get. Seems to be a very poor example of a system/program where the stakeholders are never consulted and essentially force-fed a substandard system. Anybody remember a couple of years ago when we crash tested the live long gun registration system??? The bureaucracy is alive and well in this one. . . . .
