From what I can see the fees are all over the place. It depends on the shop, the amount of ammo being delivered and the amount of time you want the shop to hold it.

CA regulations allows a vendor to charge any amount of money, as a storage fee, for receiving ammunition that is shipped to them. [11 CCR 4263(b)]

So, the amount will vary depending on the vendor.

California Code of Regulations Title 11 Divison 5 Chapter 10 Section 4263
In addition to any applicable Department of Justice fee, an ammunition vendor may charge the purchaser a fee(s) for processing the sale of ammunition between two private parties as follows:
      (a) If the purchaser will be present for immediate delivery of the ammunition, the fee shall not exceed five dollars ($5).
      (b) If the purchaser will not be present for immediate delivery of the ammunition, the vendor may charge an additional storage fee as agreed upon with the purchaser prior to the vendor receiving the ammunition.

Compared to the costs of having it shipped to your home, it costs between 25% and 50% more per round, to pick it up from an FFL. They charge a fee since it's a business, and they collect CA sales tax, which in itself adds about 10% to the cost.

At least that is how the math works out for the three FFL's nearest to me that advertise their rates.

Freedom Munitions told me last week that their legal advisors have stated that CA law allows ffl to charge $5 per individual ammo delivery if picked up same day. They should know I would think because if ffl's charge to much on top of CA sales tax which must be collected upfront, Freedom's sales would evaporate.

The same day for $5 is for PPT transfers. They need to look closer at the CA PC.

The FFL's post fees for the service - well above $5. I wouldn't do it for $5 either. And the one I spoke to, in person, is a "Freedom Munition's preferred dealer" with a charge of $25 and up, depending upon the volume ordered.

Actually "Freedom Munitions" dealers shouldn't charge anything on top of the ammo order. A receiving FFL gets a credit at the end of the year towards a Freedom Munitions order.

The dealer arrangement with the manufacturer has nothing to do with the customer transaction.

Freedom sent a notice out to all that might be interested in handling their transactions and clearly didn't have an understanding of the new regs. If they were willing to let me be the dealer and charge a markup for their product(where I buy it at a wholesale price) then I might be interested in transferring their ammo for zero transfer fees. Unfortunately "accept our ammo shipments and only charge 5 bucks and we will give you 3% off our ammo" doesn't work for me. 3% doesn't pay for the electricity for the lights in the safe to find their stuff.

Otherwise, its just another regular transaction that is subject to our service requirements and corresponding fees

With all the time & effort, an FFL has to put in to accept ammo, I'm surprised any of them do it.

Agreed, rbetts. I thought Freedom's "deal" was rather lame - especially considering they compete with local stores that sell ammo.
