This just happened to me today. I had an appointment for a replacement CDL, and I noticed the "REAL ID" required docs while on a TV advertisement while waiting in line.
I happened to have my passport card and my TWIC card which is a "tamper-resistant biometric credential to maritime workers requiring unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities, outer continental shelf facilities, and vessels regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, or MTSA, and all U.S. Coast Guard credentialed merchant mariners, " and that wasn't sufficient proof of ID for them, they wanted my social security card.
TWIC is a valid government ID that is accepted at airports as a proof of ID, but it's not accepted at the DMV as a proof of ID for a driver's license that will be accepted at airports as a proof of ID. What a joke!
"I told them "no thank you," and walked out.
I'd rather have no physical license, I don't need it. I refuse to have a federal restriction attached to my name. I'll give CA my $28 replacement fee at my next convenient time to waste my life at the DMV.

I guess you don't want to buy a firearm in CA.

I recently purchased what I consider my heirloom pistol, a Colt 1911, and I'm not in a hurry to buy more any time soon.
Regardless, I'll likely make my way back with all required docs. I just didn't want to have a federally restricted license, I'd rather have no license (for now).

A NorCal store has said they received notice from DOJ that Federal limits apply licenses are now good to go for gun transfers

                  Any verification on this?

Unless it is a bulletin, it really doesn't count as the previous bulletin still exists and would have to be revoked. It could just be bad info from one person, as we have seen before.

I went into Big 5 on Tuesday the 12th, cuz I wanted to buy the the Ruger PC Carbine (with the 10% off this weekend their price isn’t bad, and the closest Turners is an hour drive for me). They said they couldn’t sell it to me because I have a”federal limits apply” license.
The store manager called me on Wednesday the 13th and said they just got a notice from the DOJ that if the “federal limits apply” license was issued after Jan 22, they could take it. So I bought the Ruger Carbine.
I know this is Big 5 and all, but they usually don’t take risks, so there must be some truth to it. I was here seeing if the FFLs here have received anything.

Nope, that would be Big 5 being Big 5. An AB60 license issued after 1/22/18 would bear the same exact verbiage as a non-Real ID issued after 1/22/18.

I don't see any bulletin on DES stating otherwise. That individual store probably contacted one of the DOJ "expert" folks on the phone or via message. You cannot rely on that.

DOJ told me this morning FLA ID issued AFTER 01/22/2108 can be used to DROS. So I guess they fixed it.

Unless you have it in writing, you are asking for trouble and since it conflicts with the bulletin, I don't believe it is official.

After Oklahoma City, Clinton wanted to identify and locate every white American. He passed the Real ID law. Nobody paid attention. Now, 40% of California residents cannot qualify for a Real ID because they are not citizens. How long do you think the Real ID thing will last?
