The mag can't go to the son. Just have the father keep the mag and do the transfer. Son can buy 10 round mags.

Are both CA residents? It makes a difference in how it is done.

As said, the so-called high capacity magazines can not be transferred.

Got it, thanks. I read in the sticky here that the DOJ has a form you send in with $19 with all relevant info to do the intrafamily transfer.

Do you know if you have to show or prove to them that you transferred the pistol without the 12 rd mag? Or do they not get into the weeds that much?

The CA DOJ form can only be used if both are CA residents.

If both of you are CA residents, use the form. If your father isn’t, it must go through an FFL. No, you can’t have the mag unless it’s limited to 10 rounds.
