    CA required FFL signs

Just to have this in one place:

Current CA DOJ signs (until 2019) per CA PC 26835:

    PDF of current sign requirements

Signs effective 2019 (subject to change if the law changes):

    PDF of 2019 sign requirements

Talk about confusing laws. If you do a search on CA PC 26835 you get two versions. One which says it was repealed and added, so they don't it easy to know which version is current.

    Below are the two versions:

    CA PC 26835.

    (a) A licensee shall post conspicuously within the licensed premises the following warnings in block letters not less than one inch in height:

    (1) “IF YOU KEEP A LOADED FIREARM WITHIN ANY PREMISES UNDER YOUR CUSTODY OR CONTROL, AND A PERSON UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE OBTAINS IT AND USES IT, RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH, OR CARRIES IT TO A PUBLIC PLACE, YOU MAY BE GUILTY OF A MISDEMEANOR OR A FELONY UNLESS YOU STORED THE FIREARM IN A LOCKED CONTAINER OR LOCKED THE FIREARM WITH A LOCKING DEVICE, TO KEEP IT FROM TEMPORARILY FUNCTIONING.”

    (2) “IF YOU KEEP A PISTOL, REVOLVER, OR OTHER FIREARM CAPABLE OF BEING CONCEALED UPON THE PERSON, WITHIN ANY PREMISES UNDER YOUR CUSTODY OR CONTROL, AND A PERSON UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE GAINS ACCESS TO THE FIREARM, AND CARRIES IT OFF-PREMISES, YOU MAY BE GUILTY OF A MISDEMEANOR, UNLESS YOU STORED THE FIREARM IN A LOCKED CONTAINER, OR LOCKED THE FIREARM WITH A LOCKING DEVICE, TO KEEP IT FROM TEMPORARILY FUNCTIONING.”

    (3) “IF YOU KEEP ANY FIREARM WITHIN ANY PREMISES UNDER YOUR CUSTODY OR CONTROL, AND A PERSON UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE GAINS ACCESS TO THE FIREARM, AND CARRIES IT OFF-PREMISES TO A SCHOOL OR SCHOOL-SPONSORED EVENT, YOU MAY BE GUILTY OF A MISDEMEANOR, INCLUDING A FINE OF UP TO FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($5,000), UNLESS YOU STORED THE FIREARM IN A LOCKED CONTAINER, OR LOCKED THE FIREARM WITH A LOCKING DEVICE.”

    (4) “IF YOU NEGLIGENTLY STORE OR LEAVE A LOADED FIREARM WITHIN ANY PREMISES UNDER YOUR CUSTODY OR CONTROL, WHERE A PERSON UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE IS LIKELY TO ACCESS IT, YOU MAY BE GUILTY OF A MISDEMEANOR, INCLUDING A FINE OF UP TO ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($1,000), UNLESS YOU STORED THE FIREARM IN A LOCKED CONTAINER, OR LOCKED THE FIREARM WITH A LOCKING DEVICE.”

    (5) “DISCHARGING FIREARMS IN POORLY VENTILATED AREAS, CLEANING FIREARMS, OR HANDLING AMMUNITION MAY RESULT IN EXPOSURE TO LEAD, A SUBSTANCE KNOWN TO CAUSE BIRTH DEFECTS, REPRODUCTIVE HARM, AND OTHER SERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURY. HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION AT ALL TIMES. WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY AFTER EXPOSURE.”

    (6) “FEDERAL REGULATIONS PROVIDE THAT IF YOU DO NOT TAKE PHYSICAL POSSESSION OF THE FIREARM THAT YOU ARE ACQUIRING OWNERSHIP OF WITHIN 30 DAYS AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE INITIAL BACKGROUND CHECK PAPERWORK, THEN YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE BACKGROUND CHECK PROCESS A SECOND TIME IN ORDER TO TAKE PHYSICAL POSSESSION OF THAT FIREARM.”

    (7) “NO PERSON SHALL MAKE AN APPLICATION TO PURCHASE MORE THAN ONE PISTOL, REVOLVER, OR OTHER FIREARM CAPABLE OF BEING CONCEALED UPON THE PERSON WITHIN ANY 30-DAY PERIOD AND NO DELIVERY SHALL BE MADE TO ANY PERSON WHO HAS MADE AN APPLICATION TO PURCHASE MORE THAN ONE PISTOL, REVOLVER, OR OTHER FIREARM CAPABLE OF BEING CONCEALED UPON THE PERSON WITHIN ANY 30-DAY PERIOD.”

    (8) “IF A FIREARM YOU OWN OR POSSESS IS LOST OR STOLEN, YOU MUST REPORT THE LOSS OR THEFT TO A LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WHERE THE LOSS OR THEFT OCCURRED WITHIN FIVE DAYS OF THE TIME YOU KNEW OR REASONABLY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THE FIREARM HAD BEEN LOST OR STOLEN.”

    (b) This section shall remain in effect only until January 1, 2019, and as of that date is repealed.
(Amended by Stats. 2017, Ch. 825, Sec. 2. (AB 1525) Effective January 1, 2018. Repealed as of January 1, 2019, by its own provisions. See later operative version added by Sec. 3 of Stats. 2017, Ch. 825. Note: This section was amended on November 8, 2016, by initiative Prop. 63.)

Update for the signs. Please look carefully and make sure it is correct as you are the one responsible, but please let me know if you find any mistakes.

See the CA DOJ DES bulletin for details of the changes.

Yes, it is a bit confusing. If you used the signs above, then you can use the change files, otherwise use the complete file, but then you can use any of the change files. See match the file name that you want with the attached files.

If you printed the previous version of the signs, you can use this to modify those signs with the changes:

    ca_doj_signs_new_2020a_change_letter.pdf

This is a version which will be required June 2020, it can be used for January 2020 as it just has the last sign which gets added June 2020:

    ca_doj_signs_new_2020_June_letter.pdf

This has the changes for the previous version which is just the last sign added for June 2020:

    ca_doj_signs_new_2020_June_change_letter.pdf

These is the required signs for July 2021:

    ca_doj_signs_new_2021_July_letter.pdf

This is the changes for the changed versions, so if you used the previous signs and just updated the changes, then this change needs to be applied effective July 2021:

    ca_doj_signs_new_2021_July_change_letter.pdf

    Have fun!

This is a PDF for the required tags which, depending on your printer, you should be able to print double sided and end up with a tag similar to the old version. This has the extra info that is required later, so I don't know if extra info is an issue, but the wording is just what has to be what is on it, not that it is limited to just that, but it is something which needs to be checked on.

Some have wanted to modify the trigger tags, so here is a word document. I use OpenOffice, but there is an issue with posting those files.

Here are some other trigger tags I did in Excel for the Jan 1, 2020 requirement that fix the word "web site" to "website" and then the trigger tags for the June 1, 2020 date.
I used excel as it lets me easily adjust the height and sides to my printers so they print out correctly double sided. Yes the Spanish version is a little small on the June 1 2020 tag, but the requirements do not specify a font size.

Thanks for posting these files. Does the tag need to be attached to the trigger, or just in the case? Or if someone has the PC I'll go check out it, I can't find that one. Just starting out and trying to learn everything.

My field rep says in the box is allowable and they do not need to be attached to the trigger.

                It depends.

CA PC 23640(a)(1) The packaging of any firearm and any descriptive materials that accompany any firearm sold or transferred in this state, or delivered for sale in this state, by any licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer, shall bear a label containing the following warning statement:

                WARNING

Firearms must be handled responsibly and securely stored to prevent access by children and other unauthorized users.  California has strict laws pertaining to firearms, and you may be fined or imprisoned if you fail to comply with them.  Visit the Web site of the California Attorney General at https://oag.ca.gov/firearmsIf the firearm is sold or transferred without accompanying packaging, the warning label or notice shall be affixed to the firearm itself by a method to be prescribed by regulation of the Attorney General.

                (c) The warning statement required under subdivisions (a) and (b) shall satisfy both of the following requirements:

                (1) It shall be displayed in its entirety on the principal display panel of the firearm's package, and on any descriptive materials that accompany the firearm.

                (2) It shall be displayed in both English and Spanish, in conspicuous and legible type in contrast by typography, layout, or color with other printed matter on that package or descriptive materials, in a manner consistent with Part 1500.121 of Title 16 of the Code of Federal Regulations, or successor regulations thereto.
There is also the requirement that when a firearm is delivered, it has to be in a locked case or securely packaged, so it might be that just having in the package or case would be acceptable, but it is the government, so you never know.

I just had my first DOJ audit. Got dinged for the signage. Basically the 9 signs but the rep was so cool and she gave me 30 days to fix. Not bad though happy I don’t have to go through this for another 3 years.

Does anyone have just the raw text of the complete set of signs that will need to be posted after July 1st? I'd like to format my own signs and I can't seem to find just the text to copy and paste.

                        Thanks

There is a bulletin which has all the text, as well as you can look up the CA PC.

You can copy and paste the text from the PDF above.

Just curious, how do you want to format it differently? Attached is a word document.

Here is a copy of the text from the PDF for June 2020:

                          (1) FIREARMS MUST BE HANDLED RESPONSIBLY AND SECURELY STORED TO PREVENT ACCESS BY CHILDREN AND OTHER UNAUTHORIZED USERS.
