It should be reported lost/stolen, including the BATF. He needs documentation that he no longer has it since a trace would come back to him, assuming he bought it new, and he needs to be able to document what happened to it.

I can't say if there would be an issue in regards to not registering it when he came to CA, but that also depends on when he came to CA and whether it was required at that point in time.

The value should, in my opinion, be based on the replacement cost. There is really no excuse for losing a firearm. I suspect that either they are not tracking things well or they have a thief working there, which in either case is a big problem. It might be found if they put forth much more effect into searching for it. I would not, but not count on, that someone there might have decided to buy it by claiming that they can not find it.

To be clear, the FFL should be reporting it as lost since it was on his books when it disappeared. The customer should reference the FFL's report (rather than make a brand new one). The NLIP form is separate (DOJ) - I'm referring to ATF/police report if needed in your area.

I agree value should be based on replacement cost. I had to deal with this for a few off roster firearms that were stolen from us last year. Insurance understands that and the FFL that lost the firearm should too.

In theory (I hope) the FFL already reported it as lost since it's been a few weeks. It'll be interesting to see what happens if they hadn't reported it lost to ATF yet when there is a paper trail over a few weeks with them acknowledging they lost it.

I would get a copy of the police report just to insure that the FFL reported it.

There is an outside chance that the FFL returned the gun to the folks getting the insurance work done along with those he worked on (if that's the sort of "insurance work" he was doing). Ask the FFL if he contacted that party to see if they might have it.

Pretty sloppy work on the FFL's part.........

I just sold that exact gun here on calguns, I had 3 people tripping over themselves the first day to pay my $600 asking price, sold it too cheap! Since the gun is not on the handgun roster, the only way to get another one is to find a private seller and buy it via PPT. The stainless ones are very rare, I hav seen 2 in the lst 8 years for sale here on calguns.

You shouldn't use blue book of guns value...you should be using replacement value. You cannot replace that off roster gun for $350.

There should be a copy of local leo s report of theft as well. The for sure it will be in system as backup.
