Magtec Card Reader Broken AGAIN!

Is there any other options besides the Magtec Reader? We have gone through about 7 of these things in the last year and a half. They just stop working and we have to throw them out. At $50 a piece, it is starting to add up. Is anyone else having this problem? Can we use something else or is this the only reader we can use?

I have two of these POS..80% of all IDs dont even swipe..they are crap..Ive also been looking for alternate ways. I usually end up manually doing it.

I've been lucky I guess. I've had the same magtek reader since 2009.. I think I bought mine off ebay.. it reads about 99% of the cards I would expect it to (intact mag stripe, flat card). It obviously has trouble with mag stripes missing part of the stripe, or mangled bent up cards.

Perhaps it is because the older ones were made better. I still have my original one and it so far has been working.

These seem to work well when they are working, just sucks that they are basically $50 disposable readers for us.

Magtec Card Reader Broken AGAIN!

ok rather than start a new thread, i figured i would ask here. an even older thread mentions this magtek model as gtg:

my cfd paperwork didn't suggest any models specifically, just listed the tech requirements a scanner should have. my question is this: the above card reader doesn't list the ability to scan '2d barcode data' but it's one of criteria listed. is this something that was added recently? also, there are other, cheaper readers that have the same specs as this magtek listed above (except the 2d barcode data) so i'm wondering if anyone here has had success with a non-magtek product. oh one last thing i'll be using a macbook pro. thanks

at that price i guess i could have a magtek(or other comparable reader) plus the barcode gun to keep me compliant right?

Could be, but CA DOJ Requirements haven't changed yet.
