    signing out inventory

I am an FFL 01 s-corp, and going to Moab for some fun in a couple days. Is it possible to sign out a firearm I have in store Inventory to myself? It will be returned to inventory or transferred to myself upon return.

I don't think you need to sign it out as long as you can produce it if there's an audit while you're out. I don't sign anything out if I'm bringing something to the range or doing other function type tests.

How do you sign it out? Is this in your A&D Log or a different document?

So if you take a gun to the range you would sign it out to yourself as if you did it for personal inventory?

And then check it back in as if you were going to sell it? What's the duration it has to be away before you were told you had to do that? E.g, if you took it to a gun show? If you took it to the range? If you brought it home overnight to fondle?

            I'm guessing sole proprietor.

Also, if you do it that way do you have to DROS each time? I understand feds let you sign it out for personal inventory that way, but thought sole proprietor's still had to DROS.

Our A&D book has a few lined pages in the front for notes. We simply put a note LINE 286- Out for range testing by CS on 6-23-2017 and when it comes back we note brought back on XX-XX-XXXX. That's how we were told to do it. I had a ATF audit once and had taken a pistol out for testing, it was a DE .44 mag and we wanted to be sure it worked before we sold it. I wasn't here when they showed up and our inspector said no biggie, just show it to me when I come back for my final consultation when I bring back my report for you to sign. He was cool about it, I happened to bring it before then, but it was a non issue.

Ah I see. I have a notes section in my A&D, but I'm also doing electronic. So in my Dispo section I have a note like "shop gun" for example so I know it's not in the safe.

Thanks for the responses and info. I recently had an audit so I'm not worried about them coming back right away. Don't have notes section in my A&D. Maybe I'll sign it out with a post-it note in the disposition column.

ATF never really cared as long as you knew where the firearm was and could produce it during an Audit.
                    CA DOJ says:
                    ARTICLE 2. Grounds for Forfeiture of License [26800 - 26915] ( Article 2 added by Stats. 2010, Ch. 711, Sec. 6. )
                    26890.
                    (a) Except as provided in subdivisions (b) **Gunshows**and (c) **Sporting Shows and events/auctions ect** of Section 26805, any time when the licensee is not open for business, all inventory firearms shall be stored in the licensed location.

                    Best to DROS/4473 it out.

Are you transferring it to your personal inventory? In my example I was not. I was using it for company business just like a company car or other asset.

If you are transferring to your personal inventory why would you check it back in? Just keep it until you ppt it later.

Firearms DO get full of gritty dirt and such when riding. I would recommend sandwich bag with gun in it and then holster as designed if you are open carrying. I would do it anyway in dry conditions as the dust is so abbrasive. I have had guns that I could barely disassemble to clean after a long weekend of riding and carrying. Do as you wish if the risks are solely on you...
