Accepting / Storing Guns Seized by Police for Customer

A decent gentleman, from another state and traveling in an RV, had his guns taken for investigation because he was within a school zone. The school wrote a letter on his behalf attesting that he was permitted. The Police agreed to return the guns but there is a process and fees.

He is leaving the area and wanted to know if there was a way that the PD could return the guns to me (an FFL) and then I would ship them to an FFL near his home. He's completed the DOJ form/s at the police station but they were unaware of any process by which they could return them to a 3rd party (me).

Yes, they can turn them over to a FFL with the approval of the person. I am not sure of why any police department would not know that, but I guess it depends on where you live. They really should just return them to him directly, but they have their policies to cause people problems.

I have picked up firearms from LAPD for people. Pretty simple, but it takes a lot of time.

^^ What he said - I've had no issues picking up firearms on behalf of customers in Newark and Pinole. The PD had their process and I provided the paperwork they needed. Your local PD may just have never done it and are not sure what to do.

Small PD, small town, probably not much (if any) experience with this and they are trying to accommodate.

Latest is that all I need is to produce my FFL / COE and I can collect the guns. How should they be entered in the Bound Book in re. to the "Acquisition" side? Can I just put Mayberry Sheriff's Dept. as the "From Whom" entries?

The department name and address is where it came from. If you have a case number, then it can be helpful to include that as well. You might note the customer's name as well, but that is just so you remember it later, if needed.

The COE is a joke as they should want your CFD info instead, if anything more than the FFL, which is all that is really needed (not required). A printout from the BATF ezcheck is all a non-FFL needs.
