How is a transfer done that was picked up from a sheriffs office? Basically someone had to surrender their firearm because they are no longer able to own it and want to transfer it to a friend that is legal to own. Is it a private party transfer still? I ask because the firearm (pistol) is not on the list of approved pistols for California.

I believe there is a DOJ form you can send to DOJ and they will send back a NICS number and its good for 30 days to pick up. But Ive only dealt with that for MY firearm that was stolen and recovered. I know condor out in DHS has dealt with this before maybe PM him about it.Interstate Transfers $100 (DROS included with the price)

You might also check out the CA DOJ POA form which allows another to do the transfer.
I would think that it could still be done as a PPT since the firearm belongs to the person, but realize that if the buyer/transferee is denied, it will have to be turned over to the police since it can not be returned to the original owner.
The CA DOJ form for pickup would not apply in this case since the owner is prohibited and so the firearm can not be returned to that person.Kemasa.

I've done this as a PPT. The original owner came to my office to sign the seller section after I picked up all the firearms. Even though I physically received the firearms from Newark PD I processed the PPT from the original owner to his friend. In my case they were with PD due to a restraining order and Newark PD told the owner they ran out of space and were going to dispose of them if he couldn't get them transferred out.UG Imports - Fremont, CA FFL - Transfers, New Gun Sales

Transfer from sheriffs office
I have received firearms for a customers from a SO office. Bacially they are released to an ffl and you log them in with name address and case number. And firearms are then transferred PPT exempt via DES and comments section note SO RELEASE etc. example per my field repComment
