Transfer of Shotgun to out of state recipient

Question for FFL only:

I am considering giving an older shotgun I don't use any more to my cousin who lives out in North Carolina. Do I need to ship it from a California FFL to the FFL in NC or can I ship it directly to the FFL in NC?

If I can ship directly to the FFL do I need to get a copy of their FFL or something prior to shipping to cover my butt?

If it turns out things will be a pain in the butt I'll just hang onto it and he can look for a used one in his area.

Legally you can ship direct. Check with target FFL in NC policy.

No, but you should check their status here: https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/ - they can easily provide you their first 3 and last 5 numbers. SOme FFLs will give out their FFL, but it's not required.

You can save yourself some grief as well if you use a service such as shipmygun.com - while I've never needed to use them their premise of existing was to make shipping like this easier for consumers. Also, shipping through an FFL could be cheaper (depending on rates). We ship for $15 + actual cost of shipping/insurance that customer chooses.
