I just tried to get a shipper approval and I get a message saying my ffl is expired and i have to renew or submit a new FFL. My FFl expires on 1/1/17 and I already renewed with ATF so my ez check shows 1/1/20 as expirration

Is this a DOJ website issue or does the DOJ make up arbitrary expiration dates?

Did you send DOJ a copy of your new FFL? DOJ knows when your FFL is updated, the number changes.

No. What number changes? I have not received a new FFL yet. Probably will only get a letter form ATF saying it is current.

Yes, the complete number changes since one of the fields is the year it expires, but only one number changes. The old number would no longer be in the BATF database. If the CA DOJ was smart, they would just use the first three and last five, but ...

First time renewing with DOJ. The 2 digits before the last 5 change but makes no sense why CA DOJ makes the change as soon as the license is renewed. I was punished for renewing so early I guess. I called ATf today and told her I needed a letter emailed to me with my pending new FFL numbers. They do that for me with my FFL and SOT yearly. She said it was mailed this week so no sense in emailing. I told her it was for CA DOJ and the shipper approval. She said they are such a waste. I just laughed and agreed.

It is NOT that the CA DOJ changes it, it is because the BATF changes it and the CA DOJ is comparing their list with the FFL database. They should compare and ignore the year, but that is harder, so they don't.

Only one number changes, which is the year that your license expires. You can download the FFL database and get the complete number, or you can just change the "7" to "0" since the FFL renews every three years. You don't need the BATF to give you the new number. The second character is the month that your license expires.

In part, it is because of the way the BATF works as well. If you download the FFL database, which I suspect is what the CA DOJ does, the previous number is no longer there because the BATF has the year it expires as part of the number.

If you send me the first three and last five I can tell you what the complete number is. Actually, I just looked and figured it out. I will send you a PM.
