    Proof of adress

As far as the ATF is concerned if the address is wrong on an ID what is acceptable as proof of Address for the 4473

I've used a current utility bill, without a past due amount, in the past.

Ask your specific FFL what they will accept.

The instructions on the 4473 say. It has to be a government document. Some utilities are, some are not.

          Correct the address before buying.

I had this situation back in 2014. I had moved. Brought a Time Warner cable bill and DMV registration with me to every FFL I visited.

This combination of documents was accepted by every FFL I did business with in the few months before I got my new license. Except one: Addax Tactical, which not only refused to process my transaction but also told the person I was buying from that no FFL would accept a DL with an old address.

For that reason I will never patronize them.

CA DMV doesn't cut you a new ID/DL if you update your address. you are supposed to wait until it expires to get a a new ID/DL that does have the correct address.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

did you provide any gov-issued documents to any of those "every FFL I did business with" that did have your current address on it with your name on it (Time Warner is not .gov so it doesn't count). If not, those FFLs were wrong and Addax was correct. No knowledgeable FFL should accept a DL with an old address if you don't have a gov-issued document that does have you name and current address on it. that is explained right on the 4473 that you sign.

My car registration had my new address. They said that didn't matter because it wasn't photo ID.

so in that case, there was no need for the time warner bill at any of hte other FFLs.

yes, the car registration should have been enough to use at Addax.

Sounds like they need to read the instructions on the 4473.

Yes, that's true. I just always came armed with everything I had and usually they would hand the bill back and use the car reg.

Not a big deal anymore but it did piss me off and made my seller almost bail on me for no reason.

So I tell people if you have an address discrepancy, don't go there. And confirm with your FFL in advance that they will process it with your docs.

                          Hi Guys,

Nobody is perfect, and in the past we have been advised erroneously by ATF and Cal DOJ, and over time we have updated some of our policies.

Our last audits were interesting, since the agents involved thought they found issues with some of the types of ID's or secondary proof we accepted, and we had to explain a few times why and how we legally can accept these.

This type of business is not an easy one, and sometimes it is confusing, and we do our best. It might not make some people happy, and we are sorry for this.

When we are not 100% certain about something, we have been advised to err on the side of caution by our legal team.

Again, we are not trying to make this business harder or upset any customers in the process, but unfortunately it happens, and we learn from it and move on..
