Anybody using a 2D scanner instead of a Swiper?

The back of the Ca DL has 2D Barcodes on it. Many drivers licenses will not swipe due to magnetic stripe damage (Pits, scratches, sweat, whatever) The 2D scanner would solve for this. I wonder if there is any reason why it wouldn't mate to the DES software. Aren't PD's and CHP's using them now?? Whose tried this . . .Anyone??

It's a pain, but in rural CA many DL"s look like they've been drug behind a hay truck for a 100 miles. If my reader can't read it due to wear and tear, which happens about 20% of the time, I just type in the info. As said...a pain...

Our reader works. I just type it in anyhow since its just as fast for me to type it as it is to swipe it. Man vs Machine style. Half our ID's are busted and cracked or bent or whatever. Its not just the hayseed plowboys who mess their ID's up. Ever seen the ID of a Los Angeles hipster after a weekend at burning man? Me neither, but I can just imagine.

You are required to try to swipe it in, so using the bar code does not eliminate that (although it should). The new CA ID/DL seem to have a really bad magstripe and it does not last at all, so using the barcode would be a nice option, but you would still have to retain a copy if swiping it in does not work.

I'm curious, does the DROS page know if the info is swiped of typed...and the follow-up question would be, does DOJ know if the info is swiped of typed??

I don't think so for either case, but the question should not be whether you can get away with it or not. It would be interesting if they had some means of knowing, but considering the whole system, I would doubt it.

I bought a DS9208 and will try and program it in my free time. It reads the 2D Barcode info nicely and just needs to place it correctly in the proper field. If I can get it to work, I am home free on DROS mistakes.

Except when what is on the license is not acceptable to the DROS system.

I have had people which the info on the magstrip was not acceptable, one was 3rd, which the DROS wants III or something like that. Then there are the ones with multiple names and it does not put the correct names in the correct box. I forget where it put it, I think the middle name, but it was the last name.

Ah yes, the multiple namers. Well, Scanning will not replace good auditing, But if I can remove the delay with guys that have crappy mag strips, I will win regardless. More to follow . . . .

You can but per the law you still have to attempt to swipe it.

He does try to swipe it every time. It is just that it fails every time for some reason.
