You need BATFE approval to legally bring a firearm into the USA.
No BATFE approval and US Customs can legally confiscate any firearm you bring into the USA.
This includes firearms that you own and left the country with.

Contact ATF for procedures for inbound. You can do it, but it is a process and you still need to go through an FFL if it's net new stuff (if firearm).

Also, you need to know the countries rules you are going to and follow their process.
