PPT for a rifle with no serial number?

    Hey all,

Wanted to know if there is anything special about doing a PPT on a pre '68 rifle with no serial #.
I am not an FFL but I wanted to be armed and ready with the correct info when I buy the gun, just in case the FFL doing the transfer gives me any grief.
FWIW the gun was manufactured with no serial number. Serial numbers were not required by law prior to 1968.

    No problem.
The FFL just enters "no serial #" on the forms.

I have one in jail right now. "NSN" is what DOJ wants to see. The only problem that could arise is if the FFL you choose to do the transfer at is a complete moron. I actually had this happen back in the 80's when a new local shop opened and I decided to put an old shotgun on consignment. When they could not find a SN, they returned it to me and told me it was illegal. I knew better and just sold it through an add in the local newspaper instead.

Are you sure that the CA DOJ accepts "NSN"? The last I checked, they did not. NSN is fine for the BATF. The CA DOJ for the DROS wanted "2antique" or "antique2", depending on which DROS selection was made (yes, it was not consistent).

I just looked at my DROS form and it says "NSN" so, I'll let you know on or after May 1st.

              Perhaps they changed things.

That would be great if they did change it. I can never keep it straight what kind of DROS uses "2antique" or "antique2". I wind up getting an error message every dang time.

If you have a pending DROS with NSN then it took it. It will stop us from submitting the DROS if it doesn't like the serial number.

what kind of DROS is yours?

I've used "NSN" many times recently. No problems.

I talked with Robin at DOJ about this and she told to me to put "notserialized", one word, when running DROS. We have used this many times and been through audits and had no problems.

Well, I did the PPT and the store employee was instructed to enter the model number in the serial number field by his manager. He sounded very confident doing that, like it was totally normal.

I pick up the rifle on the 9th, a beautiful Mossberg 44US.

That one I've never heard of before.

Interesting that California DOJ is doing as they please. I can see future issues with non serialized old firearms. BATFE standard is "NSN".

If bainter decides to sell his rifle later down the road, new FFL will probably enter NSN, then DOJ will delay the transfer because "serial number doesn't match".

                            Not necessarily.

An unserialized Mossberg 44 could have been conceivably owned by me prior to registration.
Hell, for all they know I could have 100 of them and am selling a different one.
They have no real way of knowing.

Gander Mountain gun counter employees are generally about as knowledgeable as Big 5 gun counter employees. I bought an old Stevens double barrel there a few years ago, and the confusion when he couldn't find a serial number was hilarious. Then he called the manager, because he didn't believe me that it didn't have one, and write down NSN like the tag said. Then the manager didn't know, but she realized that I knew what I was talking about.
