    Consignment came back stolen.

Well it doesn't happen often (4 times in 45 years), but just had a consignment come back stolen. I have to say I was suprised this time around. Before they would call, then come get the gun, and you as a dealer were SOL if you had paid out any money. Today after informing me of the stolen property and asking me to secure it the detective immediately asked if I was out any money so they could get us refunded. I was not out money, but that was a nice offer. Good news for us dealers, looks like we have some protection now.

Now we start the fun of the stolen gun game. At least the gun is in good condition and got a professional strip and clean by me. The true owner will be getting their property back in bright and shiny condition.

What happens to the person who brought it in? Wouldn't it have been detected stolen on the last transfer, and does that mean your consigner got it via a shady transfer? At minimum this person gets a visit from the detective, no?

And I wouldn't count on the offer to be refunded as a cut and dry offer. More likely he meant they'd try and get restitution if they ever caught a perp.

The person who brought it it will most definitely be getting a visit from the detective. I would assume that it was a shady transfer before. He said he was the legal owner, he signed the form that he was the legal owner, he apparently was not the legal owner.

You might be right about the payment, but 10 years ago it wasn't even offered.

Lol, sorry no puck of the gun or the guy. It was just a pistol, nothing fancy, but I'm sure it's owner will be happy to get it back.

I have many older customers that still think only new gun "dealer" transfers go through an FFL. There's plenty of old timers that still do PPT cash and carry because they never bothered to keep up with the law. This end customer might have thought he was the legal owner doing a PPT the way he knew how (which was wrong)....

I had another customer that thought it was perfectly legal to do face to face purchases with private folks in AZ and Oregon without going to an FFL since it was a "private gun sale".

Sorry buddy, I've only had one pawn redemption come back as stolen. The customer got them from her dad years prior and she pawned 3 pistols at the same time only 1 was stolen. It was reported as being stolen 30 plus years ago and the detective said that he figured she acquired them from her dad who purchased it and it was reported stolen from way back when. He was going to try and track down the OG owner. She was fully cooperative and had no issues. LASD came in and picked it up. I thought it was strange since we are in the city of West Covina, but whatever. I never heard what happened with it after it left the shop.

Depends on when it was reported stolen. If it had been stolen prior to the time PPTs were required to go thru an FFL then they could have just legitimately bought it private party not knowing it was stolen.

Take a look at craigslist sometime, like the tool sections. I guarantee you prolly half the stuff for sale on there is stolen.

I friend of mine had an expensive mountain bike stolen once, and ended up finding it later listed for sale on CL. She contacted the police and she assisted them in setting up a sting to meet the guy as a buyer and they ended up busting him.
