Bringing a rifle from out of state?

I have a buddy (he hates using computers) that is visiting family in another state next month. His grandfather has an early 1960s semi-auto 22 rifle that the grandfather said he wants to give to my friend. The friend has an 03 FFL.

Can this person travel to this other state, take possession, and travel back with the rifle without having to send it to an 01 FFL?

Can you confirm the rifle is over 50 years old? If so, it qualifies as a C&R firearm. If not, then it may not, and would have to use an FFL.

A check of the serial number with the manufacturer can sometimes confirm it.

As said, if it is a C&R, then a person with a C&R FFL (and perhaps a COE) can acquire a firearm out of state, but when they return, there is a CA DOJ form that needs to be filled out.
