Question regarding private transfer through FFL

I may be purchasing a used, off-roster pistol from a guy who lives eight hours away. Getting to his FFL to fill out the initial paperwork is doable for me, but coming back a second time to pick up the pistol is a stretch.

My question: Once the 10-day waiting period is complete, does the law require that I pick it up in person or can the FFL ship to me?

You have to pick it up in person.

You must pickup at the same FFL where you start - there can be no shipping involved at all in a PPT, and a PPT is the only way you can buy off roster guns if you are not exempt or the gun is not exempt.

Now you know why it is nearly unheard of for a guy living in San Diego to do a PPT with a guy living in Crescent City. It would involve two round-trip drives equating to a drive from SF to NYC.

Try to convince the seller to come down to your area. The seller only has to make one trip. Bribes sometimes work.

The only way that I as a seller would drive that far, even half way, is if you assume 100% liability for whatever happens with your background check - as in you buy it you own it. And it had better be a very expensive gun, I'm not driving to sell you an off roster Shield - maybe a Python or Colt M45A1. But brother, if you don't pass your background check - that is too bad, because I'm not making the trip for you again. You will not get your money back from me, and the gun will be abandoned at the FFL or you will have to make arrangements to sell the gun to the FFL or whatever.

That is the risk of the seller driving a long way and meeting someone new to Calguns and with zero feedback - too many horror stories of buyers not passing their DROS here and it *always* causes a stink for the seller. That is why I never drive more than 20 minutes for a PPT as seller, unless you are super golden with your itrader and you have demonstrated successful and recent purchases for firearms. I always assume there is a chance I will have to make the drive again, and with that in mind, I'm not road-tripping.

So, you're not willing to make an 16 hour round trip to PPT a $30 RG revolver?

That's a reasonable request regarding the background check. I don't put much stock in the iTrader because there are plenty of people on here who I've sold guns to who had zero feedback. If I were the seller and the buyer wanted me to drive I might ask for an extra $50or so just to cover my gas and time if I felt like making the trip. But if the gun is a hot item to a buyer 8 hours away chances are its a hot item for somebody else closer to me too. 4 hours each way to meet in the middle is a long trek for a gun

It would have been a trade, so one of us would have had to make two all day road trips, or flights. I'm willing to do one flight but two is pushing it.

No, each of you could have made a one day trip to the other's local FFL and done the "trade" on two different days at two different locations.
