Can FFL check current registration status?

Can an FFL check the registration status on a gun without doing a transfer? I'd like to transfer some guns in my name. Say the gun was made before any registration period. I have know way of knowing if it has ever been registered or if they are currently in someones name. Original owners deceased and the guns are in the family. Can an FFL just run the serial?

why bother? if you received the firearms after the mandatory reporting timeframe, then register them. if you received them beforehand, then it is up to you.
