    Malpractice or just bad business?

    Question.

I just PPT'ed as a buyer and the dealer charged me a total fee of $60. I was thrown off by this as I had never been charged more than $35. Instead of looking bad on the spot, I wanted to do some research and find out if times have changed. After all, it's been over a year since I have bought a firearm via PPT.

Here is a quick photo of my receipt showing what I paid for. On initial review, it seems that CA state law states that dealers can only charge $10 in addition to the $25 DROS.

Is this malpractice on the part of the dealer or is it a fee that is well within the letter of the law?

    Thanks guys!

It looks like he charged you for a PPT DROS, and a new gun DROS for the same transaction. I would think it would be one or the other, not both.

Public Where do I find laws regarding the possession of firearms? I'm not sure whether I have a California record that would prevent me from owning/possessing a firearm. Is there a way to find out before I attempt to purchase one? What is the process for purchasing a firearm in California? How can I obtain a Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license? Can I give a firearm to my adult child? Can he/she give it back to me later? Can I give a firearm to my spouse or registered domestic partner? Can he/she give it back to me later?

13.How much is the state fee when purchasing a firearm?

The total state fee is $25. The DROS fee is $19.00 which covers the costs of the background checks and transfer registry. There is also a $1.00 Firearms Safety Act Fee and a $5.00 Safety and Enforcement Fee. In the event of a private party transfer (PPT), the firearms dealer may charge an additional fee of up to $10 per firearm.
Total allowed by law, for a PPT is $35, including the dealers fee.

Ask him, he may have made a mistake. It happens. But PPT is $35 total.

It looks like they may have made a simple mistake of charging the DROS fee. The PPT fee already includes the DROS fee. Maybe the person who rang you up was new?

That would make a lot of sense, but he definitely knew his way around every part of the transaction. Not a new guy.

Out 'Em so others don't just think it's part of the normal transaction. Put 'em on notice so they won't screw anyone else.

Keep us updated on if they refund the money. Good luck and enjoy your new firearm.
