    Obscured Serial Number

Can an obscured serial number be restored/enhanced without jumping through legal hoops. Got a pistol that was refinished and the serial number can barely be seen even under the brightest light. A couple of the numbers are no longer legible. The correct serial number is known from the box however.

Not sure, would contact ATF. You might be able to re-engrave the current serial number similar to how some C&R firearms get re-marked when imported. However, I'm not sure of any legal implications.

Depends on how old it is. If its post GCA then the ATF may coincider the serial number obliterated.
I wouldn't try to re cut the serial number, could be considered "altering"
The serial number "as is" is still discoverable by forensics techniques.
If anyone could recut the serial number it would be the original manufacturer.
