ID needed to sell a firearm

My wallet was lost recently. All credit cards have been canceled and new ones ordered. I have been to the DMV to get a temporary drivers license, and will have to wait for the official one to arrive. Is there any way that I can sell a firearm? I have a valid US passport that could serve as positive ID.
I have auto registration that could show current address. I would like to sell a firearm by PPT to a friend and want to know if that is an option with the ID that I have. Please let me know what you think. I appreciate any assistance.

AFAIK, you're stuck. You'll need to either wait for your new DL, or go to DMV and acquire a CA ID card. DOJ requires seller to have state issued ID, but DOJ is too lazy (or dumb) to recognize anything other than the hard copy of ID or DL.

yeah... CA only recognizes CA issued ID's........

So a CCW issued by another state is not valid nor is a Passport
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't you ship it to an FFL and have the buyer take it from there? It would add an additional $50 to $100 depending on FFL.

And a quick tip to anyone who needs an address correction on their DL, say you lost the old one as they often will punch holes in it making it void and causing the issue OP has. No ID, no sale.

Not required by law, but yes typically requested. I've received firearms from out of state where the person just wrote down their info. I still did the transfer.

Also, I've only seen this once, but OP if you can get a printout DL that also has your photo on it that should be acceptable. Most of the temp DLs don't and like said I have only seen one person that had it and do not know how they requested to be able to get it. I posted about it here when I saw it and the general consensus was that it met the legal requirement for fed and state. Whether or not the FFL you are trying to sell through would accept it is an entirely different matter though.

            Good luck.

Oh another option is if you're going to ship the firearm is to do it through an FFL you normally frequent. He isn't required to check your ID to ship out and the receiving side wouldn't need your ID since the firearm is coming through an FFL. Won't really work for non-roster and adds to cost as previously mentioned. Also, if you're shipping out through a place you've been at and they know you the ID is less of an issue as well.

ID needed to sell a firearm

I believe a valid CA ID is required for PPT or DROS, as gets scanned for DOJ by your FFL?

The problem is that in shipping it, it would not be a PPT. If the firearm is not on the certified list, this would be a problem.

You could go into a FFL and see if they will accept it from you with the ID that you have (passport), but the CA DROS PPT needs a CA ID/DL that is valid and the paper copy is not acceptable.

I just wanted to sell local. I was afraid that may be the case, and can just wait until the plastic DL card comes in the mail. Thanks guys.

Your replacement DL most likely will show up in a few days, I just had mine replaced and it took about 6 working days.

FWIW - I do have to say it is odd they do not accept a passport if issued in Calif. it gives all the pertianent information needed.

A passport does not have your address nor your CA ID number which is on a CA DL/ID and is used by CA for knowing who you are. Another government document could give your address. I don't think it is right, but it is what it is.

Incorrect. The fact that it is shipped does not mean that sales tax has to be collected, there are others factors which determine if sales tax has to be collected or not.
