    Storage Fees

Can a FFL charge a storage fee if the gun is not picked up by the 11th day after DROS date?
The fee is $100 if not picked up by the 11th day and another $100 per week after the 11th day and so on. This can be a very expensive.
I'm thinking FFL do not like to do PPT since they only make $10 and they made this policy to deter PPT.

I met the seller at the FFL and since no other FFL was open in the area, we had to do the DROS with this FFL and I drove a long distance to meet the seller.

I will be picking up the gun on the 10th day but just want to know if this was legal for FFL to charge such a outrageous storage fees.

      It is legal.

It is also bad business practices in my opinion. $ 100 for going over one day is ridiculous.

It is legal. They can't charge storage during the 10 days, but after that...it's fair game.

        * I agree with Condorguns... It's bad business.

I think it also needs to be clearly posted.

I believe at the least clearly posted. I would make them sign something also.

To each their own I guess. I make it clear that of you go beyond 30 days you will be paying for another background check $25. If you abandon a firearm you will receive certified mail after 6 months, still no pick up the gun is mine. If you keep in touch with me (mostly deployed military I will hold it as long as needed).

$100 after one day if just not acceptable. All my customers have jobs and real life outside of gun buying. It's not fair to expect someone to drop everything to run back to the shop. Yeah, it's a pain in the rear to keep shuffling around an overdue gun to make room for newer ones in the safe, but it's not $100 pain...

Not sure if this would fly in court since the state law is that a customer must pick up within 30 days from application to purchase. This implies to me that they must hold it for at least the 30 day period.

The link no longer works but there was an Information Bulletin that said it was OK.

ETA: LOL I just tried a search on the DOJ website for the FD 2001-01 document and got a Server not found error for the search function.

                    Here it is. (See #2):

Let's see there's Reed's in Santa Clara and I heard a few others in the area are doing it but I cannot 100% confirm. It is OF COURSE only on PPT's.

I did a PPT last week and was confused when asked to pay $55 instead of $35.
When I asked what the extra $20 was for I was told "storage fee" (during the 10 day wait). Not wanting to argue at that point, I paid it and left but it has been stuck in my craw since then. I know it's only 20 bucks and I know PPTs are a pain in the *** for gun shops but I don't like it.
                          What would you do?

I would confront them after picking up my firearm and removing it from their store. I would let them know that they are criminals and, to prove a point, you are willing to do whatever you have to to see that they never do this to anyone again and you will sue them for the illegal charges if they don't refund them immediately but, again, either way, let them know that you are going to report their criminal activity to DOJ.
