    DOJ paperwork

Ok, I know I sound like a Noob here but, after going through all this paperwork this morning my mind is warped and the coffee shop is just too far of a walk across the parking lot. How long do we have to keep the DOJ paperwork for? I'm 95% sure it was 3 years but I'm not sure.

Sorry Acespawn it's probably my fault. I came down with a bad case of the brain farts a few weeks ago. It took me a week or so to get over it. I mistakenly posted here in the FFL forum before I realized I was contagious, thus exposing all of you.

The good news is recovery only takes a week or so. Unfortunately the ribbing from your fellow FFLs lasts a bit longer.

          I feel your pain.

Yeah, I just went through a stack of DROS's that was at least 24" high. I couldn't see my computer monitor over them all. After all that I think I might just have caught a case of the dumbs.

Well, you can not do a DROS on a firearm if you do not have a CFLC with it yet. Also, I have had guns show up where we were invoiced for serial numbers and thats not what we got. Lawful? I don't recall reading anything that says in the PC that we can't do it, however I know that DOJ was pressuring out of state dealers to NOT provide Serial information to CA FFLs to prevent this from happening. Personally we DO NOT do this because of the aforementioned problems of incorrect serial numbers arriving here. #threadhijacked

There was a CA DOJ memo about this which said that you can not start the DROS until you have the firearm.

There are numerous problems with submitting the DROS in advance. What do you do if the firearm is lost or damaged? What do you do if you are inspected and you don't have the firearm? What do you do if the firearm that comes has a different serial number?

What do you gain by submitting it early? Is your customer going to pay you extra for your efforts and risks?

Huh? If you have the firearm, you are not supposed to start the DROS without the CFLC, but if you don't have the firearm, then you don't yet need the CFLC. This is also another reason why you don't want to submit the DROS since what do you do if you don't get the CFLC?

Ya in that case of customer asking for that then I would have to let them know there are risks

What is it worth to the risk to you? You really want to try to explain to an inspector why you don't have the firearm which you submitted a DROS for? You know that they will assume you gave it to the customer early.

The bottom line is that it is not worth the risk to you and your business.

What I was thinking is when a customer ships the firearm like was implied in the OP's question. I was trying to say that sometimes guns show up with NO CFLC. And you can't dros without having that.

What I was really trying to say is that "if people don't want to come to the gun store and buy guns nobody is going to stop them" (-:
