    Second hand dealer license

I'm a new home based FFL and looking at getting my second hand dealer license. So far, it looks like I'll have to pay for another livescan and another $300 for the DOJ to review the county's $10 license.

I can't picture making $400 in profit from used guns in the two years before I'll have to renew it (at the rate I sell guns anyway), so I may not do it.

If I want to buy used guns for my personal collection or to learn gunsmith skills on, do I need the secondhand license, or only if I plan to resell?

Thanks for the help and insight!

You only need it if you are reselling.

Without the second hand dealer license you will be unable to do consignment sales.

Sure you can buy for yourself without a second hand license.

So will it be possible for me to sell a firearm I purchase for myself and later sell it as a ffl?

Yes, but not sure why you wouldn't do it as a PPT so your buyer doesn't have to pay tax...

Likewise, if it's from your personal collection you probably don't want it to go through the financials of your FFL (not sure how you are set up) and be taxed again also.

                ^^^^This

If I am selling something from my personal collection I always PPT it. It is better for me and my customer. Just because I have a FFL doesn't mean I loose the right to privately sell my firearms.

Good luck on your new FFL. Always glad to see a new member of the California FFL family.

If you don't live in a city or county that issues the permit you will need to contact your local sheriff. They will have to pull the application off of their law enforcement data base.

Yeah... I have no idea why the application is not public.

Ha! They would never make it that easy.

You get the application from the sheriff.
You turn the application back into the sheriff
The sheriff submits the application to DOJ
DOJ approves the application and sends a license back to the sheriff.
The sheriff also signs the application
The sheriff delivers the application to you.

Remind me in the morning and I will get you Kathy's phone number at DOJ. She can walk you and your local department through the process.
