Does a Juvenile Record Prevent Someone from Buying A Gun?

My cousin asked me a question I did not know the answer to.

In his youth, he did something stupid and got arrested. For a while there he was headed down a dark path and very much off the rails. 10 years later he has grown up in more ways than one. No longer the hot head with a chip on his shoulder. Now has an abiding respect for the law and is polite to all who he meets. Has a very kind heart. Complete 180. Could not be more proud.

Will his juvenile record prevent him from buying a gun? What box does he check on the form?

It may depend what the offenses were and how good the lawyers were. He should probably consult a lawyer now, before he starts checking any boxes.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

There's not enough info in your posting to give a definitive answer.

There are certain criminal convictions of a juvenile that will produce a lifetime firearms disability. Please refer to Penal Code section 29800 for the details.

There are also certain offenses for which a sustained juvenile court petition will produce a firearms disability through the age of 30. Please refer to Penal Code section 29820 for the details.

        Got more information.

There was no conviction. Charges were dropped. He was arrested for "battery on person", taken to Juvenile Hall to scare him straight, and then released the next day. The arrest is on his record. However he is over 18. 20 I think, and wants to buy a long gun for hunting.

If he does need to speak with a lawyer, anybody know of one specializing in 2A in the Stockton area? Any idea on (ballpark) what looking into this might cost him dollar wise? At 20, there's barely enough savings for the gun.

An arrest alone, without a conviction or sustained juvenile petition is not disabling.

or the PFEC (https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/p...ms/pfecapp.pdf) which is cheaper than a COE (no need for livescan).
