DROS Sig 556 Upper Only

I searched CGN, but couldn't find the answer that I'm looking for. . .

Are we able to DROS the upper of a Sig 556 series rifle/pistol? If so, would it be classified as "receiver only" as with AR15 lowers?

It gets confusing because the BBL is attached. I would assume that anything under 16" was intended for pistol on this platform, but I need to dig further to see what Sig offered on these.

You can DROS a Sig 556 upper receiver as a long gun. The same way AR-15 receivers are DROS'ed. The FFL may or may not mark "receiver only" depending on how they feel about it with the barrel attached. It is technically not "receiver only".

It would be more helpful if you explain what are you trying to do. Buy a Sig 556 Rifle upper? Buy a pistol upper?

I know that there are other pieces to the puzzle to handle, but I'm plotting out what I need to do before making the decision to start the cost calculations, paperwork process, and gather parts.

I can't seem to find any data on non-pistol short bbl Sig uppers other than people cutting down patrol model bbls. It is likely that I may need to source a P556 via PPT, but since the Sig platform has a bbl attached, my concern is the not being able to use a registered pistol upper as a rifle. This concern comes from the AR platform of pistol receivers not being able to be utilized as rifles and vice versa.

I have read that the recent release of the Swiss P553's were all purchased pre-order and were being used to make SBR's by there respective owners so maybe it could work.

If it doesn't look promising, I will likely just source a P556 and enjoy it for what it is. Just trying to accomplish boyish desires to mimic the real item that I cannot have.

Do you live in CA? Because you are not going to get an SBR permit (CA Dangerous Weapons Permit) unless you're a movie studio or an FFL, and the ATF won't issue you a tax stamp unless you have a CA DWP.

If you are trying to build a Sig 556 pistol (no stock), you would not be able to user your "long gun" DROS'ed Sig 556 upper, even if you cut it down after.

If you just want a Sig Pistol you are better off getting one via PPT.
