Police ID for residency & Safe affidavit question

Does a Police ID card qualify for a proof of residency? Im sure some of you have run across LE who dont like to have their personal addresses linked to anything public.

Also, when selling a new gun with an OEM lock, is a safe affidavit for required or is there another document needed to fill out?

What proof of residency are peace officers required to provide?

Peace officers, including reserve and retired peace officers, may present valid credentials issued by a California law enforcement agency in lieu of the other required residency documentation. This consideration is given to peace officers who do not want to provide documentation of their residence address for security reasons and who otherwise do not object to having their credentials copied by the firearms dealer for inclusion with the DROS record.

RZ, where did you find that? We use LE ID for proof but if their ID has the wrong address on it per federal law I was under the impression they still needed to supplement with a government issued document showing their correct address. CA may be okay with it but I've never seen anything saying the ATF exempts them.

Bushido, if the OEM lock is ca compliant just mark the dros section of the fsd as oem and your done. Safe affidavit wouldn't be required but also wouldn't hurt any.

It depends on which proof of residency you're asking about. State or Federal?

For handgun purchases the state requires a proof of residency other than ID/DL. LE are exempt as RZO stated above.

The feds require the purchasers residential address on the 4473 and a government issued document that bears the purchaser's name and residential address as POR. There is no LE exemption to the federal requirements that I am aware of.

There is some crossover regarding what is acceptable proof of residency for the state and the feds, but it is helpful to clearly separate the issues and address them one at a time.

This info was pulled from the CA Doj website. I made the assumption that the OP was referring proof of residence for the state and not anything to do with the 4473.

There is not an exemption federally, they must provide a government issued document with correct address. Now from what I understand, we don't need to copy it for the feds, just note it down on 20b.
