    Shipping a Firearm

My father in law sold a gun on gunbroker and is asking me to ship to a FFL down in Southern California. I've never had to do this before so can some provide some step by step directions?

Do I need to log it into my bound book if he comes over and we go to Fedex together?

I recall that someone mentioned that Fedex might be the cheapest option for long guns.

usps ground is the cheapest. Do not label outside of package as firearm notify usps of contents and insure and ship signature required. He does not have to be ffl to ship by the way. If the receiving ffl says it must then go bty his rules.

Where in SoCal is it going to? You might want to use another FFL.

If you are giving a copy of your FFL, you should put it in your bound book. I have been told that you don't have to if it is not kept overnight, but that is strange and I think it is best to have a record of any firearm which goes through your business.

For long guns, FedEx ground is the cheapest. For hanguns, it is USPS.

It is going to a FFL in Burbank per the request from the purchaser on Gunbroker. I don't mind helping him ship but just making sure I cover everything since it's new to me.

Just make sure that they pay for the extra costs of having a FFL deal with it (you). Depending on where the person is, there are other options.

There is no much to it, just box it up. I would log it in your bound book, then drop it off at a real FedEx location. There is no requirement that you provide a copy of your FFL, but often FFLs don't know that and then get upset without having a copy. You would need to include the CFLC letter.

Either regional rate or flat rate. I generally find regional rate cheaper with more options on box sizes.

I use flat rate boxes. Easy and not expensive.

To determine the cheapest method, you need to compare the priority, flat rate priority and regional flat rate. It varies depending on the weight and the distance. If you go to the USPS web page and just say that you want to get rates to ship a package and not select the type, then it will show you the different rates. It is also cheaper to pay and print the label online.
