Safety Card? Need the experts to help

Hey guys, thank you for all your previous replies on my other question.

I have an additional question that i think i know the answer to, but want to make sure that i'm not over complicating the matter.

Even in a PPT, the buyer, be it myself or whoever, needs to have the safe cert card, appropriate for the sale of the weapon (for hand guns and one for long arms) correct?

So if i am buying any kind of long arm, PPT, i need to have the safety card for long arms, and obviously get DROS'ed?

Yes as buyer you need Firearm safety certificate or FSC to purchase long gun and handgun, doesn't matter if you do PPT or FFL transactions

You can get a hunting license to be exempt if you don't want to get the FSC card. Also gets you out of the safe handling demo.

... i don't remember there being a safety handling demo when i first got my safety card... or was there? Is this new?

There is only one type of card being issued currently, the Firearm Safety Certificate. It covers long guns and handguns. The fee is $25 and it is a short multiple choice test.

The safe handling demonstration is a separate part of the buying process. The clerk is supposed to make sure you know how to safely load and unload the gun. They usually demonstrate the steps and then have you do the steps (unlock the gun, load a dummy round, check the chamber, unload the dummy round, relock the gun, all while keeping finger off the trigger).

You need a FSC (or have an exeption) to take possession of any firearm in CA. That includes buying, receiving as a gift, borrowing, etc.

The safe handling demo existed with all handguns and would occur typically on pick up. It's one of the forms you sign.

The long gun requirement started 1/1/2015.

You may not have done it, but you signed a form under penalty of perjury that you did it I've heard of some dealers that don't necessarily keep doing the demo to regular customers (though legally they are supposed to do it every single time).

I have been asked to do it 3 out of 4 times. Last time the guy just filled out and signed the form and said "you know how to use this right?" lol. I guess he figured he had his bases covered. He also didn't mention the lock requirement at all although it was my first PPT. Is there no lock requirement for PPT?

If you have an unexpired Handgun Safety Certificate, you can use it for handguns until it expires.

A Firearms Safety Certificate is good for both long guns and handguns. If you have a FSC, you no longer need the HSC.

Correct. I was answering the topic of the thread which was the PPT of a long gun and so didn't bring up these specific points.
