While they say that the CRPA does not benefit from the ad, I have to wonder if the people involved are the same between the two.

Whether an ad or not for FFLGuard, what they reported in the article is apparently true... DOJ is currently out auditing FFLs more aggressively than usual as we speak...

I wonder where they suddenly came up with the resources to go off and scrub the FFL roster?

Same here. My favorite FFL just got shut down as well. AFTER 35 YEARS of doing biz in SoCal.

If people are willing to say... what areas are these FFLs located in?

I don't know for sure if it's DoJ audit-related yet, but a FFL up here in the SFBA (Digital Instincts) mentioned he had auditors present this week and as of yesterday, posted a going-out-of-business sale announcement on FB. That would be one helluva coincidence...

I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, FFLs who aren't doing it properly, cutting corners, etc. need to be called out on it. It makes the rest of us look bad. Proper compliance with the law costs time and money, inconveniences customers, and down right causes the loss of sales (ie refusing sales when the customer can't come up with proper ID or proof of residency).

There are FFLs in my area who do not follow the law simply to make a few extra bucks. Some of them have been audited by ATF or DOJ and have been told to fix it. Some have and some haven't. It'll be a shame when they get audited and possibly shut down because they're nice guys and all, but it'll be no ones fault but their own.

On the other hand, I don't trust the DOJ to do fair and impartial audits. The DOJ has been known to use audits to harass FFLs. It may be that the FFLs they are shutting down have made simple mistakes and are not receiving a fair shake to correct the problems. Heck, the DOJ may be fabricating violations. I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me based on my firsthand experience with them.

Until the DOJ gets it's house in order and creates a track record of professionalism (which my more recent interactions with them would reflect - however, I'm only a sample of one), their motives will be suspect in my mind and the minds of many gun owners.

I've heard a few horror stories over the last month or so, and the DoJ definitely seems like it's out on a hunt. When I've discussed the situation with a few FFLs, the one common denominator was that many FFLs who did a ton of SSE business are getting screwed. The auditors are digging extremely deep into their operations and paperwork, and we all know that if anyone looks hard enough with the intent of finding something, they will find something. It's really a shame - and it smells a lot like unfair ex post facto prosecution.
