In January I bought and transferred a firearm using a temporary license and my expired license with photo.

A week ago my buddy drosed two guns using his temp and expired ID. When he went to renew his license he attempted to add an additional license class but failed the test and re-scheduled to take his failed portion. He didn't test for his class c just a straight renewal. His dross was refused for not having the proper ID. Did I get lucky or did he get screwed?

You got lucky (the ffl not so lucky once the audit comes) . Valid hard copies of drivers license is required.

The shop owner and the second in command participated in the transaction. Why go through all the paper work if it was the FFL who ultimately balked?

Yes, but there is no requirement for the FFL to copy the ID unless the card reader does not work. This could make it hard to prove what actually happened.

How do they tell if you scan the ID? I don't see anything on the DROS printout that shows it was actually scanned or typed in.

If you got some of the data wrong, that is one way to tell. The web cam that is always watching you is another :-). As far as I know, they don't know, but the law says you have to copy it if the reader does not work. It would make sense for the entry system to detect whether the data was from the reader or not, but they don't seem to do that.

Makes no sense. Already have to copy 2 docs and the DL fits on the same page.

I'll never understand some laws.

I know it's not required but I always copy the ID with the rest of the docs. Keeps my rear covered.

In the past, you would not have to copy any documents for a long gun, but now you do. It makes sense to get in the habit of always copying it so that you don't forget when you need to, but some people might not like that.

I always wonder how some FFL's were running DROS for customers in 2014 during SSE every 30 days. Do they just keep a copy of their license on record and manually key it in if they prefill out a 4473?

I also made it a habit like Condorguns by just keeping a copy of the ID.
