    The ten lost tribes

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold. And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold; And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea, When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee."
    - Lord Byron, English poet 1815 A.D.

There was many many years ago. Not now.

I thought it was generally believed that they were assimilated into the Assyrian kingdom.

They were. When the Persians allowed the Jews to return very very few did. They had been gone for so long that their lives were now wherever they were and not in Israel. This is why there were so many Synagogue's throughout Asia Minor and the Levant.

There were a lot of Jews in Persia. Some migrated east to Samarkand and Bukhara. When the Roman’s exiled the Jews from Palestine even more went eastwards. There was a vibrant trade on the Silk Road that Jews eventually worked their way into. Some even found their way into China where they set up a community in Kai feng. That Jewish community is still there but down to only remnants of what they were. Some of the Kai feng Jews emigrated to Israel.

The Bible says that they "followed the east wind" and "settled in the isles of the sea". Some people have interpreted this to mean they went to England/Europe. There is evidence that the Celts migrated to Europe from Asia Minor, so it's "possible", however farfetched it sounds.
