    Scriptures of comfort

    What are the scriptures of comfort and peace? Psalm 23 is often at the top of every list. What are some others?

    A little background. I daily visit two elderly sisters who are in a hospice home. They share a room. The one with cancer is slipping very fast now. Family is concerned that when she goes home to The Lord, the other will soon follow. They are both believers and I read the Bible to them. It's time for me to be more focused in my readings. What are your suggestions for scriptures of comfort?

    We have a thread on scriptures for a memorial service. We do not have a thread about comfort for those about to go home to their Lord.

    Please keep this on topic.

    Glory to God and peace to His children.

    Psalm 23

    The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

    He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

    He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

    Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

    HI Bro, may I suggest that emphasis be placed on the last line of Psalm 23 : Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, AND I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOREVER. These words are a sure comfort to me personally

    Psalm 1.

        Many dying saints have asked for John 14:1-6 and Rev. 19-21 because they're all about their future in eternity.

        1 Peter 1:3-6 because v.6 says "In this [v.3-5] you greatly rejoice" while the rest of the verse can be summarized "...while you are in trials right now."

        1 Peter is all about how to live victoriously while suffering in trials. Yes, the first focus is persecution, but the terms for trials and suffering are general so that the book applies to all trials.

        1 Peter is a detailed application of Colossians 3:1-4 for during trials (especially v.1-3). Bottom line: Help them to NOT focus on their pain/suffering/etc. because that is earthly focus. Help them get their mind off of themselves and onto "things above" - especially the eternity that Christ went away to prepare for us (John 14:2-3) and, according to Peter, is ALREADY prepared and waiting to be revealed (1 Peter 1:3-5).

        Blessings,
        Pastor Bill

            Another scripture of comfort:

            Lamentations 3:21-25, English Standard Version

            21 But this I call to mind,
            and therefore I have hope:
            22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
            his mercies never come to an end;
            23 they are new every morning;
            great is your faithfulness.
            24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
            “therefore I will hope in him.”
            25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
            to the soul who seeks him.

              After church yesterday, my wife and I went to visit the elderly ladies. I brought my Taylor acoustic guitar and a bunch of sheet music. We sang some old hymns together. The older lady sang along with us. Her voice is normally weak but she sang out loudly. It sounded like the angels of heaven were singing in that room.
