That's not what God's word says.

Folks telling other folks their doctrine is false goes on everyday, since say about 30 AD. I have heard it myself aimed at me, so you disagree eh ? So what, my feelings aren't hurt at all. And the beam or mote in the eye wasn't about doctrine.

i think this verse is talking about correction. for example: an adulterer trying to correct a person in illicit relationship. the adulterer needs to clean his act first before he can effectively correct that person.

If someone says a way to heaven is by giving a lot of offering. Clearly that is bad doctrine. Do I need to be sinless before I can correct that bad doctrine? I say, no.

Agreed. It's not about correcting doctrine.

Yep, that's another misused Christian phrase.

Christians murdered each other across Europe for generations over "correct doctrine". Mostly relatively minor issues as well. While of course arguing or debating is one thing, I am also disturbed by the increasing number or prideful Christians who think "correct doctrine" trumps relationship and loving one another (Biblical not worldly love). Sure we need to get the big stuff right about who Christ is, salvation by grace alone, etc, but most of the stuff I see that divides brothers and sisters online and in churches is over the stupidest of stuff.

I think the primary point of the "take the log out of your own eye" scripture is just that - there are NONE of us that are without sin. And the moment you think you have your "act together" enough that you can start running around "correcting" people, your sin has become greater (like a huge log) compared to the speck in the person you want to deal with. Hypocrisy has a strong root in denial of our own sin.

I think when we "correct bad doctrine" we have to be careful how we do so. When we pound and scream and demand that people agree with our point of view, we've automatically erred. This is why when I think someone is wrong about scripture or theology I usually phrase it as, "I disagree", or "this is where I differ"... etc. Preachers that scream and demand their view is the only correct view to me are perfectly lining up with what the apostle Paul described in 1 Corinthians 13:
                            1 Corinthians 13:1-10 ESV
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. [2] And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. [3] If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. [4] Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant [5] or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; [6] it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. [7] Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. [8] Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. [9] For we know in part and we prophesy in part, [10] but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

I want to thank everyone for their replies so far. I see some of you backing up your comments with scripture, that I can appreciate and learn from. The others that gave opinions don?t seem to do me any good. Maybe that isn?t your motive. To those that did share scriptures. It seemed very Christ like, taking your time to teach and not just slam a quick comment. And here are a few scriptures that come to mind on being Christ like: ?And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.? Matthew 1:1; ?Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:?Matthew 28:19; ?And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.?Mark4:1, ?The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,?Acts 1.1. There are plenty more where those came from. My intent on my posts are to inspire us to get in the Word and learn from each other in love. You sometimes scriptures have a surface meaning and a much deeper meaning. As always with love , your fellow believer Chugiak
