Songs that people go nuts over, that I don't get

Is this song popular at your church?
    Move Your Heart
Song by Maverick City Music and Upper Room

… And I just wanna movе Your heart
    Get caught within Your gaze
Right hеre in Your presence, God
    Is where I wanna stay
Oh, just to dwell in Your house
Waste my hours and my days on You
    All on You
    … Is it a fragrance?
Then I'll pour my oil out
Is it a life laid down?
Then here I give my vows
    … Is it a song I sing?
    Then here's every melody
Just tell me what moves You
Just tell me what moves You
I don't get it. To me it's theologically vacuous and condescending to God. But people at my church went nuts over this song, bellowing these lazy lyrics.

    1. "Get caught within his gaze"? What does that even mean?

    2. Why would dwelling in the house of God be considered a "waste" of my hours and days?

    3. The song keeps asking God what moves him. Such a lazy songwriter. Are they too lazy to read the bible or even google "what pleases God?" Here are a few verses that I found just from googling. It's not a mystery. It's laid out plainly.

    Romans 12:1
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

    Ephesians 5:8-10
for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

    Colossians 3:20
Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.

    Psalm 51:16-17
    For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.
    The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

    Romans 14:17-18
for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.

    Psalm 5:4
    For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;
    No evil dwells with You.

    4. The song foolishly asks whether it's the fragrance, laying down life or a song that we sing that would move him. C'mon, do your homework and educate the people with solid theology through the song.

    I couldn't sing this song.

Never heard of it, and will have nothing to do with ANY church that sings it !

How about Micah 6:8, Hosea 6:6, and others?

I'm unfamiliar with the song in the OP but it seems similar to what the Babylon Bee Worship Song Generator outputs. I think it is fair to say that a lot of what passes for Christian music these days is not something folks will be listening to in ten, twenty, or more years, but there is no accounting for taste.

            First time hearing it myself.
And the sheer number of repetition of the chorus tires me out.

It turns out that Maverick City Music (cited in the OP) is connected with Elevation, a well-known false seeker-sensitive church. Not surprising.

Contemporary praise is but one major reason why I enjoy traditional worship.
You can't argue with 300 years of tradition and beautiful music.

The lyrics are pretty bad...please refer to the reasons in the OP.

Actually, that is not lazy and is a standard lyrical method to write that every lyricist knows. (I've used it in some of my own compositions.) To present a question then give the answer, or response. IE - "What could wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus."

                          Here's what the lyricist did:
Q: Is it a fragrance A: then I pour my oil out
Q: Is it a life laid down A: then here I give my vows

John 11 speaks of Jesus being deeply moved by people.

33 "When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled."

                          35: Jesus wept.

"38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance."

I'm not a lyricist, but part of the congregation - part of the group that you minister to when you lead praise. As we have the responsibility to test the preacher's sermons against scripture, I believe we should test the songs we sing against scripture also and not be bamboozled by the melody or other mood manipulations.

God is with us always and sees us all the time. Caught within his gaze sounds like poetic drivel. But whatever.

Here's the entire definition of "waste": you left out "carelessly" and "or to no purpose"

                            verb
                            1.
use or expend carelessly, extravagantly, or to no purpose.
"we can't afford to waste electricity"

Yes, nothing but the blood of Jesus washes away our sins. You proved my point. It's theologically sound. This song doesn't provide sound theology after asking those questions. Ironically, none of those activities move Jesus. The heart (i.e. motivation) behind those actions move Jesus.

Being a professional has caused me difficulty at times. I would find myself critiquing pitch, balance, lyrics, melody, tempo, equipment, attire, skill, syntax and dynamics. I was focused on the things instead instead of the Creator. It was about the performance, not about worship.

                              2 Samuel 6

13 And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.

14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.
What David did was unprecedented. What Michal did was.... well. We get the point. She was not focused on the celebration nor the ark. The complete story is in 2 Sam 6.

Being a worship leader is difficult. A few people will dislike everything you do. A few people will love everything you do. Most are fine with whatever you do. Some think that only hymns written before 1950 are worship. Some like contemporary worship. There are churches for everyone. Some have praise bands. Some have pianos, organs and choirs dressed in choir robes. Find the place that Holy Spirit wants you to be... and listen to what he is doing. We are all going to be together for eternity. Let's figure out how to get along before then.

If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth. - Ronald Reagan
