This quote, from this speech, really helped me to understand the foundation beneath recent events.

The whole speech is worth reading, and his credentials-- including eight years in Russian gulags-- give him a credibility that many modern pundits and commentators lack. I think he exhibited a very respectable moral courage.

Prior to stumbling on this I was unaware that Charles Spurgeon and Karl Marx were contemporaries in nineteenth century London. While it seems Spurgeon did not explicitly criticize Marx or Marxism, he did go after socialism pretty forcefully. The meat-and-potatoes portion of the video is about 25 minutes, and though Spurgeon's specific responses to socialism come near the end, I enjoyed the rest of it.
