Non-Christians in this Forum?

Checking to see if any other non-Christians are in the room. I don't expect to see a majority here by any stretch but just curious to see what other religious traditions or perspectives might be represented.

I'll start -- I loosely attend a UU Church. Philosophically, probably Stoic. Spiritually, probably animist. But I won't take either too seriously.

Raised Catholic. Left it all behind in high school. Now nearly 69. Don't regret it one bit. Religion is not necessary to live a good and proper life. In my case, I found religion to be way, way too encumbering and full of fanciful fairy tails that one is "required" to believe. Don't need that.

Then I would ask, as a non believer in anything would you bother coming into this forum? Now Mossy is Buddhist and though I don’t agree, I understand him having an option and a point to offer as he does believe in something. But for non believers in anything why bother engaging?

I definitely do not qualify as non Christian, but if you see yourself that way, so be it. Full Gospel used to be called Pentecostal red neck type believer. But if others are not, ok, to each his/her own. The Almighty will certainly sort it all out when we give account personally to Him.

I just don't believe Jesus was anything more than a radical Jew who happened to have a faith built up around him. Frankly, I think he'd be embarrassed if he were to come back today.

There's no reason why an atheist or agnostic can't be just as good as a Christian, Jew, Buddhist, etc. It's just that I don't espouse things I can't prove. And all faiths, at their cores, pretty much say the same thing anyway. I prefer my "faith" without the trappings and embellishments. I also can't say there is or isn't a god. Probably not. But a small "maybe". Or not.

And the concepts of heaven and hell are exactly that....concepts. And people saying that they do exist because it's written in the bible is zero proof in my book. The bible was written by men, mostly 300 years after Jesus lived. And much was left out when it was first codified.

Most of the Bible ("Old Testament") Dates from ~200 BCE to the 1st century. These are part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The more recent ("New Testament") dates from the 1st to 4th century. The oldest mostly complete Christian Bible is the Codex Sinaiticus which dates to the 300's. There is extensive evidence that the texts are all copies and the originals were recorded close to the time the events occurred.

In addition, there are the ante-Nicene writings and commentaries which were written around 100 to 325.

My grandfather was a preacher of a church for 40 years. And he told me ounce, (there is no truth in the courthouse, and there is no truth in the church buildings. Because both end up being run by man.) I wouldnt say religion is totally unnecessary. But i think his words are true.
