Christians Poll: Do you believe in Physical Healing?

Non Christians, please pass. Your answer is obvious.

For those who believe in the bible and attend church on a regular basis, do you think physical healing through prayer is real?

Of course I believe in physical healing. God made not only doctors, but pharmaceutical companies to heal many of our ailments.

There is no theological reason to render it impossible. Pray for it, but trust in Him, not necessarily the healing.

Physical healing seems rare. Psychological healing less so.

Luke 16:31 ...neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.

I know someone, an older good friend, who died after a heart attack.
The hospital staff worked on him for ~45 minutes but his heart would not start. They called it and pronounced him dead. After cleaning him up a bit they let the family come into the room to pay their last respects. Over the next three hours other family members arrived. They prayed, sang hymns and thanked the Lord for his life. All his family are strong in the faith. The eldest son called the mortuary to come pick up his body...

Suddenly after three hours of flat line and no brain activity he cried out "This REALLY HURTS!" Having several broken ribs from the CPR he was in great pain but now alive.

He had no brain damage. He even seemed to be healed from other problems that had been bothering him. This happened at Tri-City hospital in Vista/Oceanside ca.

Another older friend was on hospice, suffering from terminal lung cancer. He could barely walk, was on oxygen until the Church laid hands on him and prayed. Next week he had miraculous improvement, his Dr. said "what are you doing with that oxygen" he had improved so much. Months later he's going strong, a dead man walking like all of us...

Ex15:26 And He said, “If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer.”

Polls are tough because of the way they are worded. You didn't say who is doing the healing in your poll. But, Yes, I believe that God heals according to His will and His direct and indirect action (Providence through doctors, etc.). People do not heal (theologically called "cessation of gifts") like Jesus and the disciples in Acts healed.

Thanks for your views. I have a hard time having faith to believe in miraculous healing but I've heard several first hand accountings that are amazing

The Bible has examples of God healing people. I think it is rare, but that is not a reason to not pray for it. Another perspective, this life is not the prize, its the next life that is eternal and without sin.

Link to a comprehensive opposing viewpoint to the miracle of 'healing',

                      Why won't God heal amputees?

I do absolutely believe in it and have received blessings from it. None of the nine gifts listed in 1st cor ch 11 have passed, ceased etc away.

I think it depends a bit on how you define it. In the end, are you going to tell the Creator of the universe how things work?

I went through a health scare last year that kills many that are affected. I had lots of people praying for me, I survived and according to the doctors and everyone else, recovered miraculously... I lost 20 pounds to necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating bacteria), it's a lousy way to lose weight!

Whatever you wish to believe, I would contend that everything about our lives is in the hands of God, I'm good with that.

I knew person years ago, A catholic priest in fact who has a gift of healing.

He doesn’t call it faith healing because many of those whom he had cured has little or no faith at all...( is non Christian or atheist in fact) and had only come to him because they were curious or as a last resort....many of these people became Christians specifically because God allowed them to be healed because Of the priest’s intercession..

This particular priest received his gift later in life ....after his ordination when he realized that he had healed his mother who was stage 3 cancer, through prayer and laying of the hands. He would heal more who were afflicted by some form of cancer and eventually was granted a special traveling ministry unique for his gift instead of serving at one archdiocese or parish, and wound up healing hundreds of thousands of various diseases or ailments...some were cancer, others were blindness or other handicap, or some addiction like alcoholism, and other less serious physical problems....(now I wonder if he was able to heal any psychological problems if it were the result of some chemical I,balance or brain damage...I have to find out)

I later learned that a friend I grew up with who had cancer was traveling with this priest as a volunteer and was being healed over a longer period of time, as some were, the way an exorcist treats some of the diabolically afflicted...

I didn’t know what to think, when I first heard of him as news spread that he was coming to our archdiocese in Los Angeles....he had a special healing mass one Sunday evening and this was just in time for my Mom to be prayed over...She was about to have surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and it had gotten so bad she had to wear this wrist guards and was in constant pain. After the mass, two of my aunts were quickly healed of frozen shoulder. There was at least one who who couldn’t walk who was able to afterward. His prayer is silent and he just goes and prays over everyone one by one.

Afterward the priests were dining in one of the bungalows and I went and introduced myself (I was still in college at Loyola Marymount university at the time) and then introduce my parents to the priest.

He noticed my mother has wearing the wrist guards and inquired about it. (This priest was notorious for only healing while working...people try to take advantage of him or abuse him by trying to get his audience with money or special favors.
.he Is reply is usually the same...wait in line like everyone else....sometimes he will do is work in a stadium or school auditorium or parish hall, as well as a church or chapel. I believe it was alan Greenspan who once asked him to heal his wife’s affliction but wanted her to have special treatment and forego the lines and he simply said that she must attend the mass and wait in line like everyone else)

Anyway, he told my mother to remove the braces and he said a short prayer over her, that seemed like a typical priestly prayer, before going back to his dinner. we thanked him and left.

My mom was instantly healed...the pain immediately dissipated...she never had to get that operation and the carpal tunnel never returned.
My mom does have a very strong faith in God...attends mass every Sunday , serves as a lector, and sometimes attends daily mass and serves as a lector as well...my two aunts who’ve had the frozen shoulder taken care of do not attend mass regularly, and are not as religious as the average Sunday goer, but have faith....

On the other end of the spectrum, I have a friend who grew up Christian, also a Catholic, and what priests might call a mystic...basically a person with psychic ability. And it was so strong that a Buddhist monk sought him out ( weird like in a movie) and told him he had healing power and trained him.
I didn’t know anything about his abilities except for what he is able to see ... and that he was learning how to do energy healing. When A girl i knew contracted a severe and deadly bacterial infection, I contacted my friend who came to the hospital and did his healing thing while he remained laying there with her eyes closed because she was so out of it.
Soon afterward, she awoke an said she could feel the water leaving her lungs and she could feel hot sensations while he did his thing...
He didn’t touch her at all and was about 1foot away so she couldn’t possible feel his body heat....this I understand even less because it’s some form of eastern mysticism I dont dabble in as a Christian. I don’t think he’s channeling any eastern spirits or anything, but it’s “energy” based and still I don’t know anything about chakras or crystal or anything. But I believe it’s real. And in this case God might still be a part of it, then again maybe he just allows it.....

Wording makes it tough. Does God heal people? Certainly. Does prayer and laying of hands heal people? No, only God does. That being said, it certainly is possible for God to give people the power to heal, as he did with the disciples, but seems very very uncommon. I would be highly skeptical of any people that claimed to have that ability today.
