I dress up like Martin Luther, and give out Small Catechisms to all the Catholic neighbor's kids.

Go to church. Of course I'm Lutheran so we always have Matins on Reformation Day, larger congregations will also have Vespers.

Then of course drink beer, eat bratwurst, and take the kids trick-or-treating.

Did that at Max's Allegheny Tavern - right across from one of the city's TWO German Clubs - after Reformation Sunday Vespers.

"Over the last reporting decade the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has lost more than 1 million members or 25% of membership,

now down to 3.5 million, from 4.7 million ten years ago.

At this rate of declineinterview, capably conducted by Emily McFarlan Miller,

with six new women bishops shows no such interest.

Instead, they seem determined to double down on the heterodox theology and political activism that have been so destructive for the ELCA and other Mainline Protestant denominations."

There are inherent dangers in extrapolating information in dynamic systems. I wouldn't put a time-frame on it. The decline may only be cyclical, affecting all denominations or even all religions. Even if ECLA was declining more than the average, it may still be within the realm of a standard deviation around the mean. Can't say I have any real answers here, only that the data doesn't prove anything yet.

It would be very interesting to see how other denominations compare in the US, as would other religions and even other countries. Like in Biblical interpretation: context, context, context.

Happy All Saints Day brothers! This day I always try to remember the story of the protomartyr St. Stephen, and of the future St. Paul who held the guys belongings while they beat to death St. Stephen.

Sister congregation had a memorial service tonite, for their new Pastor, who died of cancer and a stroke, before he ever took office.

He was buried in his hometown of Ft. Wayne on Monday, but the memorial was tonite at the church he was called to. It was very nice - most of the area Pastors came, and our District President preached the sermon.

"The first thing I ask is that people should not make use of my name, and should not call themselves Lutherans but Christians. What is Luther? The teaching is not mine. Nor was I crucified for anyone...How did I, poor stinking bag of maggots that I am, come to the point where people call the children of Christ by my evil name?"
