Yesterday and today, untold numbers of churches in Germany, Austria, and elsewhere in Central Europe will be celebrating the feast day of St Hubert. Hubert, also known as the Apostle of the Ardennes, is the patron saint of hunters. The story is that the early Hubert, a godless hunter, came upon a red deer stag with a cross between his antlers. Hubert became a devout Christian and the bishop responsible for Christianizing the area of eastern Belgium and surrounding districts.
The St Hubert's mass is usually celebrated using hunting horns for parts of the liturgy along with choirs of hunters in traditional clothing. These days, the services are often ecumenical with both a Protestant minister and priest officiating together.
I've never been to one of these services, but it seems sad to miss out.
