            Short and concise, beautiful.

I might add to the quote above, below.

...For this is the whole duty of man.
The first duty of a man is the seeking after and the investigation of truth.
            Cicero

For a Jew: From Shlomo ha-Melech, the wisest of men: Ultimately, all is known; fear G–d, and observe His commandments; for this is the whole purpose of man.

If you're interested in the Jewish perspective:

Oh, "fear" is not a good translation from Hebrew. There are a lot of things that are poorly translated from the Hebrew to Greek to English. "Awe" is a better word but still not entirely accurate. Probably more the recognition that we are nothing and that He is everything. "Ein Od Milvado." Easier to clarify in a discussion rather than a post.

                          Also from Chabad re "fear":

                          Maimonides writes:

Anyone who serves out of love and occupies himself with Torah and mitzvot and follows the ways of wisdom should not do so for any earthly reason or out of fear of the curses or to receive the blessings, but should fulfill the truth because it is the truth. Out of this he will receive goodness. This level is a very high one, and not every wise person attains it. This is the level of Abraham the Patriarch, whom God called His `friend', for the reason that he served God solely out of love. This is a level which God commanded, via Moses, us to attain, as it is written, "And you shall love the Lord your God". Once a person loves God appropriately, he will fulfill the commandments out of love.

The Shelah comments that this that the Rambam calls love is actually the very basic level of service out of true fear. In the language of the Chassidic masters, this is called "accepting the yoke of heaven" and is the beginning of all service.

The Christian Church often, or usually, does its best to ignore the "Jewishness"(for lack of a better word) of much of the Bible. Most of the Bible, more specifically the Old Testament, is a book written by Jews, about Jews, for Jews.
If one doesn't understand the historical background and usage of the words and ideas, one often gets the wrong idea of what's being said.
If one applies those understandings, one may find that what the Bible is really saying and that may be much different than what the Christian Church has said.

Israelites. Don't confuse the two. It's easy to do. The Bible does, or at least most English translations do. Jesus was not a Jew, at least not in the 'modern' sense of the word.
