    Ford Explorers

Anyone operating behind one yet? We have them but haven't seen them in the field yet. Sitting around out of service and at the EVOC facility.

I drove my friends on a long trip... We are probably going to them sooner rather than later; I haven't had the pleasure of taking them out on the EVOC course yet though...

All this to say, "no" to your question but I would be more than happy to get one in my current assignment!

I'm pretty interested in how they are going to teach EVOC with all those Explorers being ALL wheel drive. Those just will not let you do what rear wheel drive vehicles let you do.

I've been through the EVOC course and had one for a few weeks before I changed assignments.
They handle great and have more speed than a Crown Vic, but you have to drive VERY smooth. Try to man-handle it through the corners and the traction control shuts down the power.

Don't get too excited with the Explorer. Ive driven one off/on for about a year and I do not like them. The wheel wells protrude into the driver compartment and really reduces the room for your left leg. Im 6'-4" and I feel cramped in the thing.
They do handle very good and won't let you get too far over your head when in pursuit mode. It does cut out power so you feel like you aren't going anywhere. They do not have much high end torque, so in a high speed pursuit for any length of time, you will lose if the bad guy knows how to drive.
All the police equipment needs to go somewhere, so they designed trays to fill up the back of the SUV. That equipment rattles around like crazy and drives you bonkers after a short time.
Other than that, its great....I guess it beats an ole' crown vic with 180k miles on it.

About two months ago I traded in my crown Victoria with 140,000 miles on it. I'm currently in patrol and also and EVOC instructor.
And I'll say this about them, I love mine, easier to get in and out, very good speed, very good handling, very comfortable, at least for me. i'm a huge fan.

Poor visibility, watch out backing up.

Very true, back up cameras are a must.

The explorers we're going to get will be reserved for officers 5'10 or taller. No joke.

They are pretty sweet, have a few of them at my station and they are nice. Waaaaaaaaay nicer than the Vic or the Expeditions that we have. Gas mileage is horrible on them though. Plan on filling up a couple times a shift

CHP went with them. Apparently they can't be tipped over. We have a couple at our agency. Got to drive it. Not too bad. I didn't try to tip it but it is a decent ride. More room. Sit higher. One night with it so I didn't get to do too much in it.

Love ours. Lots of room. The Eco boost does make a difference
