    Someone is harassing my niece.

I was just informed by my niece that someone has been leaving sexually explicit phone messages on her cell phone. This has been occurring for the last 2 weeks. Apparently this has occurred before while she was in college. These calls have been sometimes made at 4 AM. It happens for a week at a time. She suspects it is the same person. I suspect it is someone she knew in high school or college.

Until now, the caller had blocked his phone number. However, one time he may, or may not, have slipped up. The number is 510-560-3061. I told her phone numbers are easy to spoof. Chances are the creepy person may have borrowed some strangers phone. Too many variables.

I know LEO's cannot divulge private information. But I would like those with the time and inclination to determine if this phone number belongs to a predator. A Yea or a Nay would be very helpful to ease the families mind. If "yes" we will go to Oakland PD and file a report. A PM would be greatly appreciated.

My niece is a good girl. She graduated from college last year and is well on her way to having a full time career. I want her to have a good life.

Just report the number and have the PD determine if it is or is not the one belongs to the perpetrator. You don't have to prove anything.

And, have her change the phone number.

I actually want her to go to the police, but she doesn't want to make a huge or potentially embarrassing public fuss. This is a new generation of young adults where cell phones and social media are their lives. Much more so than our generation.

Reality is, the best person to stop these calls is your niece... She may not want to change her number, but if she doesnt, then there isnt much that is going to happen. At the most, this is a misd PC 653m. Proving the calls came from this number every time is only half the battle, finding out who is making the calls is a whole different thing. My Dept wont even respond to thses calls, they refer the caller to make a report on line. If an Officer did get dispatched its just a simple report. The officer may try calling the line (like I just did and it went to VM) but thats probably it. Have your neice change her number and set her phone up so it will only accept calls where the caller ID is not blocked. Good luck.

Encourage her to go file a report if for nothing else, as informational (documentation) purposes only (no prosecution desired) Burn the messages or take photos of the texts and transfer to a CD and leave with the reporting officer

If she doesn't. Burn the messages / images to a CD and file away for future records. (That way it can get off her phone).

Tell her to go to the local Police Department and make an annoying phone call report; as noted above 653M of the California Penal Code. It is an easy matter for the police to put a “trap” on her line to determine the number the calls are being made from. Pretty much a standard follow up investigation. Once the trap is in place, she will have to keep a log of all incoming calls. A simple matter to cross reference her log with the incoming calls. Once it is determined who is making the calls, the police can seek a warrant. Another option would be for her to get a restraining order.

Cell and regular phone companies are not east to work with. We ask them all the time to ping phones on missing persons, wanted subjects and they rarely will do anything without a warrant.

Use Trapcall - it might expose the blocked number. It does this by first forwarding the call to another number before being rerouted back to you. Toll free operators have access to ANI, which works regardless of caller ID blocks. Trapcall doesn't use a toll free number, but they have other methods to pull the ANI. However ANI can and usually is spoofed if Caller ID is spoofed. But someone who is just blocking caller ID is probably not savvy, and will usually be exposed with ANI.

It will be worth the small fee:

That (tel2name) is a well known sham website that randomly generates false names and address info to associate with phone numbers. It is search engine click bait designed to generate ad revenue pure and simple, or worse used to spread malware in a drive by. Type in your own phone number and see what happens

LEO's see this in the field all the time. Everyone is up in arms except the supposed victim. There is a specific penal code section for lewd or threatening phone calls in California. Either she (the victim) wants to take a report and have it investigated or she doesn't. Third party hand wringing is pointless.

A search through white pages shows it being a bandwidth smsenabled internet phone. Have your neice block the number at the very least. I agree that she should also change it. If the allegations were significant enough the pd could locate this person through the ip address making the calls. Since its harrassing calls at this point there is not a lot that can be done. The person could likely be accessing the internet from a public wifi connection which wouldn't get you anywhere.

Not a LEO, but another alternative is, if she has an Android phone, add the phone number to reject list.

Call doesn't go through, no voicemail option, nada, zip. Dude can't leave any messages and your niece doesn't have to worry about having to deal with it anymore.

It is her problem not yours. She needs to learn now how to handle problems now. She is college educated so she could figure it out. Life is harsh and she needs to stand on her own two feet.
