    Rain

How does one keep their pistol dry in the rain? Or, does your gun get rained on, inspect it later?

I would think you would have to tear down more of the gun than just a simple cleaning, for water could have gotten in the smaller areas. I was just wondering what are some tips for others wondering the same thing?

I never worried about it. Routine cleaning about once a week, and a thorough cleaning after shooting it. It never failed me...

    I carried a G22 BTW...

I never worried about my getting wet. It will get exposed to the elements....can't help it.

If I wasn't too tired I would field strip it and set a hair dryer next to it and let it go for awhile. I got more rust on the mag springs than the gun itself.

I too have not worried to much about it. I've stood in the rain for hours soaked through and through with the pistol still operating as new. Like stated above, routine cleaning, field stripping and drying it off if you are worried is sufficient. I'd actually be more worried about the ammunition but haven't had any issues before.

Duty weapon is a Glock 17

When it rains we're standing in it for about 8hrs a day. It's never caused a problem in our handguns though it does play havoc on the AR-15s and M4s...Though they are more exposed and hopefully 8rs a day of constant exposure isn't quite realistic.

I simply dry, clean, and lube as normal. Mags for certain brands (Beretta) tend to rust, so I'll hit them with a light coat of lube and then use a dry cloth to completely eliminate all visual traces of oil, then leave them as long as possible before I have to load again.

A couple weeks ago my M&P9L was like a pig in the mud while I rolled around in a mud puddle doing a drill. I haven't cleaned it yet, it still has caked on dirt on the grips from the mud, and it still runs great (this is not a duty gun!).

Carried a beretta 92 and sig 229 in the coast guard and they were constantly getting drenched with rain and sea water... Wiped it down and added some oil before it was put away and they always went bang

I know a few people who would argue that's how their gun gets cleaned....perimeter on a rainy day.

Seriously though, it's not a big issue. Even in the worst rains I still purposely leave my gun unprotected by poncho so my draw isn't fouled up. I've never had it not heard of it being an issue. I worry about my radio more.

If you're in a marine unit, I recommend more frequent oiling. I armor Glocks and Remingtons and I've seen more than a few pistols carried by our salt water guys with rust in the firing pin channel. Never been enough to affect function, but always better to prevent it before it can cause a problem.

If my duty gun gets rained on bad I will oil it after work; otherwise I will wait until the end of my work week

I also carried a P230 and a G27 at different times in a vest holster. The P230 has significant slide wear from being soaked in sweat almost daily for years (still functions fine), but the G27 (which I used longer than the Sig) still looks almost brand new.

I think being soaked in sweat is worse than getting rained on, and I still carry that same G27 today as a CCW gun. With normal cleaning and maintenance, a quality gun should not have any problems being exposed to moisture.

I love watching some of those out of control glock test videos where a guy disassembles his Glock, dunks it in whatever substance you would least likely find a Glock in, clears the barrel for safety, reassembles it, and puts rounds through it. It's purely anecdotal but after watching those, it's hard to imagine rain is going to do anything to the Glocks I own.

I don't worry about the rain. My pistol was in the rain and salt water before. Never had an issue as long as I take care of it.

For the rain, I let it dry, wipe it clean, and lube.

For salt water, soak it in the fresh water for about 30 minutes, dry, and lube it. No sweat. Of course I had to get new ammo. I had a recruit who was afraid to shoot his pistol when a chunk of mud landed on the slide. I wiped it off with my hand, shake the pistol in the puddle of water, and have him continue to shoot. No problem either.
