Best way to talk to a supervisor

What is the best way to get ahold of a Deputy's direct supervisor?

I placed a call tonight when I got home from work and the responding deputy was awesome to deal with, kind and courteous, and was genuinely engaged in our conversation.

He gave me good info, and I gave him back some too.

I just want to be sure that interactions like this get recognized.

I agree, a letter to the department can be good.. Additionally, if you know the Deputies last name (or at least badge number) and you want to actually talk to someone, call the non-emergency line and ask to speak with his/her supervisor. If they don't patch you through to them (which they probably won't); just leave your number.

ETA: Just wanted to note that these types of things mean alot to most guys/gals on the street. They remind us why we do our job and that our good work doesn't always go unnoticed.

I made sure I got all of his info. Solid guy. I'll craft a letter tomorrow

You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

Who do I address it to? Just the station?

As noted above, put it in writing. It is never wrong to send it to the head of the agency. No matter how large (LAPD/LASD) it will work it way down to the officer and get in his personnel file.

If it isn't in writing, it didn't happen.

A letter would be great and can be added to his file. I concur that writing it to the head of his agency would be the most effective

Address it to the Sheriff. Let him or her know that the Deputy did a good job.

Good for you!! Atta boy letters are rare. When they come in where I work they post them up and eventually make it to the officers file. Really makes the troopers feel good about going above and beyond in public service

Sort of ironic that filling a compliment isn't anywhere near as obvious as filing a complaint. Maybe it's actually dripping with irony.

A letter (not an email) will go into his file forever. A phone call might get him a pat on the back at roll call.

When someone calls the station and ask for the watch commander and discusses the issue, the watch commander will fill out a service comment form and place it in the deputy's file. At least that is one of the ways that my department does.

Letter to the sheriff at the sheriff's headquarter will do it also. I received both in the past.

A letter to the Sheriff is the way I would do it. It was always nice to get a letter in your box from a satisfied citizen.

Great advice given about the letter and kudos to you for wanting to do it. I was told early in my career that it takes 100 atta boys to get rid of one aw poop (had to use the clean version of the word)
